Well, I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but I'd have to say that
currently the fastest computer in the world was actually built by
Intel. It was custom built for the US Department of Energy and has
9200 Pentium Pro 200MHz processors. It has a performance of 1.34tflops
(1340mflops, or 1.34 trillion floating point operations per second).
For more info, take a look at
http://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/CN0611B.HTM.
However, if you're looking for an off-the-shelf (as much as these things
go) supercomputer, then SGI-Cray may well produce the fastest. I don't
really know, since I haven't really been shopping for one recently ;).
