>>>Hmmm.... why IS it that text adventure games died out?? ;-) In part, it's a result of the post-MTV culture. MTV can't be the focus anymore, because it's not as popular as it was a number of years ago, but it's paved the way. Studies on M-TV show that those who watch it have an attention span of 1.5 minutes! You have to keep things moving at a fast pace--not only give viewers instant graitification, but also keep them fixated on the screen. They've trained a culture that everything has to be fast-paced and that's usually accomplished by visual and audio stimulation. OK, now to the topic of text adventure games dying out: The basis of text games is TEXT--you have to slow down (especially slow readers) and read each word of the message and then you have to use your cognitive brain and come up with a response that will eventually formulate into a solution to the game--that takes A LOT of right-brain power and time. Text games can be very frustrating. In the post-MTV culture, people, especially young people no longer have the patience for such things. They want to be dazzled by the spectular audio and visual enhancements now available to the masses. Shoot a monster in the head and see its blood splatter in front of you-- that requires an instant reflex of shoot and run to get an immediate result to satisfy the senses. Game companies realize this and they have one goal: produce games that sell! And if they think that the majority of game players want a brainless finger-jerk reflex game with the latest sound/music and graphics, that what they will make. - Ranger Fox
