16-ghz Supercomputing ... the Dept. of Defense contracted Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to build this mammoth. gave 'em $1 million! Its said to be 1,000 times faster than Intel's fastes screamer. The DoD wants them to build a "PetaOps" Super Computer (1,000 trillion operationsper second) the basic design calls for an 8-way super scalar architecture with a 16-ghz clock that could reach 128 billion operations per second. By lashing 8 of these bad boys together, they expect to reach the speed of the DARPA-specified machine.(info summary from july 97 pc magazine, page 9) chip shop owner wrote in article <01bc826f$cda73780$86de989e@default>...>tha t was sarcasm>>quekky <que...@hotmail.com> wrote in article><5ou5dv$lgs1@ine tgate.tp.ac.sg>...>>> >is a supercomputer at Sandia National Labs (I believe they are still an>> >afilliate of Lockheed Martin) built around 9,200 PPro 200 CPU's.
