Currently, these are my preferences:

Fidelity Presets -- custom
see below

Background Image -- off
not part of the game

Fidelity -- low
doesn't look good, but it brightens up the map and makes units
easier to see/distinguish 

Shadow Fidelity -- off
units are easier to see/distinguish

Anti-Aliasing -- 4
I run at 1024x768 also, anti-aliasing smooths out the lines

Texture Detail -- high
buildings/units look better

Level Of Detail -- low
makes the strategic icons show up sooner when zooming out (with
Always Render Strategic Icons turned off)
