Is this supposed to Yeah, how dare game companies use the capabilities of CDs to make terrific games featuring hundreds of megs of sound, speech, and music! How dare they produce games that would have to ship in a crate on 100 floppies! How dare they... Wait a minute. All those things are good... Seriously, CDs do have some drawbacks (like having to play with the dman things in the drive) but even that can be taken care of if you have a large hard drive. There's a simple DOS command which allows you to copy the whole CD to your hard drive, then con the computer into thinking it's reading the CD-ROM. Voila! Of course, you have to have a CD-ROM drive to begin with, but with double speeds under a hundred buck now, it's time to take the plunge if you haven't already. : suppress piracy or something? Software companies think that coming : out with games on CD-ROM only will increase their sales, because : instead of John Doe #1 buying the game and giving a copy to John Doe : #2 so they can play over the modem, they figure both John Doe #1 and : John Doe #2 will go out and buy one copy each. Unless they're Westwood (for example) and make games that can be played by modem even if you own only one copy. I think if C&C is a success, we may see more of this. : John Doe #1 (that's me in this scenario) refuses to buy any more CD : only games unless they can be installed and run without the CD in the : drive, because they are a pain in the ass. What's more, my buddy (we : will call him John Doe #2) is a 30 year old non-technoid who would not : plunk down $50 on a computer game if his life depended on it, and the : only games he ever plays are those I give him copies of. For the record, I tend to agree with you, philosophically, but I don't know that it's that smart to say stuff like that in a public forum, since you technically just confessed to the crime of computer piracy, and God knows the SPA Gestapo loves to step on anyone they can. : And since I can't give him copies of copy protected CD games, then I : don't have anyone to play with over the modem, and that means that I : am not going to buy the fucking game at all. Sad to say, but for evey customer like you the game companies lose, they gain several because of the awesome capabilities CD-ROMs give to games. : So instead of selling two copies, the software company just sold minus :0 one copy. + Actually they sold no copies (to you). : Also, I have 3 PCs. I like to be able to install whatever software I : own on any one of my 3 PCs, incase I want to have friends over for : network play. Only one of my systems has a CD-ROM, so CDs sort of : cramp my style. Yeah I know that software companies like to believe If this is really such a big problem, get an external CD-ROM drive so you can rotate it among your machines to install the software. Of course, each of them will need a pretty big hard drive... but how cool would having your own private Decent deathmatch network be? Of course you can do that one via disk. : The whole appeal of Civnet is that it's multiplayer.. If I can't play : it on my network here at home then I'm not interested. Am I the only one who's not that pumped up about CivNet (whatever year it comes out)? I mean I played a LOT of Civ, board and computer both, but I think I'm done now, unless they're radically changing (ie updating) the game, which I don't think they are. : Spectrum Holobyte, I can sum it up in two words.. NO SALE. Let's bitch at the right people. MICROPROSE will (eventually) do CivNet. Just for the record, because MP has produced some shoddy products of late (X-COM2, Ultimate(ly Worthless) Football 95... -Dr.23 -- "The truth of a proposition has nothing | to do with its credibility.
