Freespace - little bit disappointed

I've been playing my way through some of the space games I never got to try as an Amiga owner, and having enjoyed most so far, came to Freespace. I'd heard a lot of praise heaped on the game so that might have made it a bit unfair, but I have to say that I wasn't a huge fan of the game. The combat is fine, I enjoyed refining the control settings and dogfighting my way through the Shivan forces, but the game seemed to lack atmosphere - no pun intended. I never really felt inspired to tweak my weapon settings or change my ship, the game world just didn't really seem to come to life in the way that Freelancer and particuarly the IWar games did. IWar 2 in particular, just getting back to your secret base was cool! For me Freespace was definitely a good game, and no argument, the combat side of things was excellent fun, but that was pretty much it, and given the prestige the game enjoys I felt slightly disappointed. My grumble isn't about the graphics, but for the record I was playing the original, non-modded version of the game. Should I try Freespace 2?

FS2 fixed pretty much everything lacking in FS1, including that intangible "atmosphere" that was missing.. - Solomon -- Solomon Peachy pizza at shaftnet dot org Melbourne, FL ^^ (mail/jabber/gtalk) ^^ Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur.

Yep, the game was really built around combat and not so much on the story
side. It was the tiny fighter up against the massive cap ships (FS2 even
more so) that was fun. The reason for the prestige is probably because at
the time of release, it was like an amalgamation of the best elements from
other combat-orientated space-sims, more refined and perfected.

Might as well, if you have it. I would say it is "more-of-the-same", only
bigger, on a grander scale. (The SCP mod graphics would likely help with
atmosphere, too)
Have you got around to Wing Commander 3,4,5 yet? You might enjoy them more
(part space-sim, part "interactive movie") - hey, they at least had actual
*characters* :-D
Ah, nostalgia ... <*sniff*>

I played the first Wing Commander game back on my Amiga, somebody patched the CD32 version - and I think I played a follow-up on the Playstation. I've got X-Wing Alliance on its way, but I think i'll give X2: The Threat a go next, and see if I can get along with that. It looks like it has plenty of depth, but maybe too much in terms of its menu system. I've still not tried Frontier: First Encounter which is a bit daft, as I was a big fan of Elite and Frontier, and was looking forward to its arrival on the Amiga, which ended up being cancelled. Given all the reported problems at the time though, it didn't seem as much of a loss as it might have.
