Hello, Anybody here have anything more than the fanboi stuff on the publisher's website? Looks like it may be an updated Privateer. Thanks, The Spankstinator

You aren't by chance on the Elite IV development team, are you? Second: This froup is dead. Dead, dead, dead. It's even in the FAQ. If I could pry the FAQ out of Shingen's cold, mostly dead fingers I would quote you chapter and verse. Anyway, it's the last question in the FAQ. It says, "Is this froup dead?" Appropriately enough, no one has bothered to supply an answer. Third: Never heard of Space Force - Rogue Universe until now. At the risk of starting an actual discussion, what do you know about it? Apparently it's a sequel -- did the first game show any promise? Most importantly, is the developer a narcissistic git worthy of inspiring a flamewar or two? Thanks, Bret

Looks promising (but then they all do, don't they?). Follows the rule that no space-sim shall any longer be developed west of Germany. The developer is Croatian, but the game's done in English....so no waiting for a translation. Supposedly JoWood will have it out "2Q 2007" (Hey, that's right now). The first Space Force was an arcade game, same developer (I guess), but different publisher.

I have downloaded the trailer and read through some of the forum posts at the Rogue Universe site. I agree with Doc that it looks like it has some promise. What are you guys playing these days?

The space-sim genre, however, is practically non-existent these days. IIRC, in the last five years only eight SP space-sims have been published: Universal Combat, Freelancer, X2 and X3, Starshatter I and II, Parkan II, and Darkstar One. Most are "open-ended" and a couple are multi-genre because they include land/air combat and RTS-style base building. I haven't included Vega Strike (freebie and lots of fun), a couple of buy-online minor efforts whose titles I've forgotten, and MP games, such as EVE. Best place for "news" (?) on Elite 4 is alt.fan.elite (which is almost as dead as this ng). General gaming ng's tend to be "new game" sites.....no new games, no posts. Back in the day (1990's), IIRC, there were one or two space-sim published every month...many of these from major developer/publishers (Origin, Lucasarts, etc). WC1-5 and expansions, P1/2 (plus the one released for online download), the Descents, Hardwar, Archimedean Dynasty (kind of "space-sims," but maybe I'm pushing it a bit with AD), the whole X-Wing series and expansions, FE and FFE, Star Crusader, and, of course (how could I fail to mention it here?), BC3K. There were undoubtedly many, many more that I no longer recall. They're boxed up in my garage, but I'm too lazy to go and dig them out. :)

It's top down, and it has stragety, rpg and (classic, text based) adventure elements - would that qualify as space- sim? Possibly not, depends on how tightly you define the genre. Starwolves however should be in the list. I only played the demo, but that was pretty much an in-cockpit space flying game from what I saw of it (didn't like the interface, so I dumped it really quickly). I just recently got X3, played for a bit and then got sidetracked by AOnline :\ -P. -- ========================================= firstname dot lastname at gmail fullstop com

Played it to death and am currently on a play-through on "insane." Nevertheless, by my definition, it's not a "space-sim." For me, a space-sim is an FPS in a cockpit. No matter what other features it has (RPG, RTS, trade, etc.), it has to have a first-person view from a cockpit somewhere in the game. Maybe this is too narrow, but I guess I base it on the original WC series. I played the Star Wolves demo and thought it was a 3rd person view game, but I could be mistaken. Couldn't get with it for some reason. Probably involved in some other game at the time.

Now this is why I always defer to the experts. I would never have known that JoWood games were substandard. I'll lurk in the Rogue Universe forums and watch to see if the complaints ever see resolution before buying (much the same as I did for X2 - I haven't bought X3 yet). Is it an Eastern Block thing to have poorly realized software? My company uses some software published by these guys from Belarus and it is kludgey.

Obscure eastern european developers trying to get their product out to a broader market probably have to go with whatever publisher they can get. One thing I'll say for the east euros is that they're innovative. The folks in the west seem to be endlessly remaking the same 3 or 4 games.....with better graphics.

Looks like it may be an updated Privateer. Hrmm, I dunno, directly from the Gameplay section: "What will starship fight be like? Players will have the opportunity to engage in large-scale space fight, fighter or capital ship class, against an enemy NPC controlled vessels, each with their own individual characteristics and style of fight. In between missions you get to customize your ship with a possibility of selection of different equipment." Doesn't sound quite right to me... and this little section just turned me right off: "What is Damage Booster? Damage booster is necessary upgrade for your fighter - it improves the damage you inflict fighting capital ships and becomes a very deadly element of large scale battles. It's better to avoid large ships without one equipped. " Wha...? Why would this be in the Gameplay section? Are they trying to turn people off the game? Reminds me of darkstar one and its arcade style ship upgrades, certainly a steaming pile of crap imho. Meh, we might get lucky. Ceo-

Hello Group Okay the gameplay movie looks nice but I have two questions. First how are the fighters controlled, Joystick or Mouse? Sorry to say if its a mouse only game, I will be really bummed. Second question, any idea on system requirements??? Thanks dkbarnes "Spankstinator" <kahuna12@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:1178663783.399648.324320@w5g2000hsg.googlegroups.com... >> And JoWood stands for unfinished, bugged games that rarely, if ever, >> receive patches after release. Tech issues : controls are sloppy , mouse flight is weird , it's not like FL or DS1 , mouse pointer isn't the actual guns' target , you got to orientate the ship so target reticle overlaps guns'crosshair.Maybe it's just me. I'd better go with the stick . Problem : joystick control is badly supported , no deadzone , no sensitivity , no support for more advanced controllers than a 2 axis 4 buttons. You can still use 3rd party software to compensate but meh. Keys won't work right.Default controls is W A S D for up/down/left/right strafe movement , thrust is <UP> <DOWN> : uncomfortable , you need a 3rd hand . You can reassign , but then keys won't work. Right now I can no longer set thrust level after reassigning specific keys , and other keys work erratic. Sometimes they work , sometime they don't. Unplayable. Gameplay issues: kinda like a single player MMO , weird . 12 races , but you can use only one . Ship gets damage over time , you need to repair constantly = moneysink . Market is stupid , no way to tell one market is better than another , sometimes a station sells loads of stuff basically for free , you find it , you are rich. Jump system is stupid too , you get to target system at random position , meh . Huge system means a lot of time to get to destination , random pirates can be supernasty , more time or death . Different damage types , but as far as i'm concerned you're stuck to one both for guns and shields , if you bump into the wrong enemy yer good as dead . Save game , reload , system gets randomized , you can exploit it easy . Map is ridiculous ergo navigation difficult. The game is there , and it's a good one , but this is a beta release . Patches will eventually make it better .

Yeah, lots of things need fixing (the target reticle, for example), but, overall, I'm enjoying it more than I did Darkstar One. Game looks to be easily moddable, so it might turn into something over time. Modders made FL what it is today, maybe the same will happen here.

We have a potentially very good game which turns out being just good b/c of the usual Company/Publisher/Whatever issue that forces developers to work their asses off , in order to ship a very good working beta , on time. Then comes the patch(es) and boom , very good game. Give'em a little more time and the game comes out better. Then you can mod it to awesom. But I know nothing about business planning , and this explains why this rant is nonsense.
