Hi
Can anyone confirm me what kind of copy-protection does X3
Retail versions have.

For what I know there are 2 version, the first and now a
Game of the year edition.
This is the links from Amazon UK to the 2 editions:

X3: Reunion - Game of the year edition
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000FGBV5C/

X3: Reunion
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0009RF7J8/

I want to know what copy-protection does each one of these
Retail editions have and if it is true that X3 is also
available via STEAM and if neither of the Retail version
have STEAM.
Thanks

PS: Sorry for cross-posting to strategy and space-sim but I
really don't know were does X3 belong.

i have both x2/x3 in retail boxes (neither ran on my machines at all) but
yeah theyre available on steam. you cant use the retail editions with steam
though, only d2d or steam purchased eds will merge and update with steam.

i hope i can still get retail updates manually

gamecopyworld has full information on what the retail eds use for protection
(i must have storaged my copies, cant see them)

I have to agree with you - Steam is the best way of buying games.

I share your dream that, one day, all games will be available this way.

Starforce. Why I didn't even consider trying it ... that and the fact that the
X2 demo/tutorial just annoyed the hell out of me.

Good news : X3 is indeed available from STEAM so no Starforce copy
protection.

The UK / International versions before Steam all have Starforce.

The US version of X2 used SecuROM (wonder why, perhaps it's because
fair-use laws matter in the US?) instead, but all versions got a copy
protection-free executable with the last patch.

As I understand it, X3 now has one of these executables as well
(probably to coincide with the new Steam release).
