Fooling around with the demo atm and wondering if the full game is worth it. I desperately need a new open-ended space-sim (tho' this one appears to have been around for a while). Thanks for any info.

The sectors are pretty much all the same. The only reason to explore space is to find floating "cargo-pods" out in the middle of no-where while you are constratly attacked by EVERY hostile ship that warps in. The planets only have 1 base per planet, and theres nothing of any interest going on to bother xploring planets anyway. So it's either mine while fighting off hostile ships (not very lucrative), take the standard missions ( IE: fly to waypoint, kill enemies, collect reward), or trade between systems. Trade is pretty simple in the game. The lower the system the cheaper the item. The higher the system, the greater the profit. So by purchasing a small fighter in the starting system and warping three systems up, you can make more money faster then doing anything else. So it's basically a combat shooter in space with a pretty good flight/physics model. =P

Well, I've also got the ultimate noob question: how in the hell do you find the base on the planet. I just started the freeform portion of the demo and, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to find the base on planet Saphire in the starting system. Is the base marked on the radar scanner or something? I cruised all over it (using up half of my limited demo time), but can find nothing. I checked the forums and the FAQ: nothing.....which means it's something incredibly simple and obvious. Nevertheless, it escapes me.

Nevertheless, it escapes me. Never mind! I finally stumbled on the obvious. I thought "red" meant "hostile" or some such, so I never headed toward that red indicator on my hud. Well, I've got 24 mins left before the demo kicks me out.

I'm looking for something not too taxing (i.e., a game that's not like having a full-time job). I'm also having some control problems with my stick. Not sure if it's Evochron or the stick and associated software. Course I guess I could just play it FL-style, with the mouse/keyboard. Maybe I should get back to Vegastrike.....I haven't checked that one out for a long time (still got a decent save somewhere). I could also install UC (still in the shrinkwrap after a year or more). Didn't install it before because (1) I couldn't really work up the enthusiasm necessary to tackle it (went with X3 instead...another less than satisfying experience) and (2) read somewhere it doesn't work with XP SP2 w/o some screwing around with various files. Whatever happen to Elite 4? Alt.fan.elite seems pretty dead these days. Has everyone decided that Elite 4 is simply not going to happen?

How is Vegastrike? I downloaded all 100 plus megabytes of it and then never played it. :-) I find the older I get the less likely I am to waste a lot of time on things. I ask for opinions first a lot more now. :-)

You won't have to install anything else, as the $25 reg fee gets you the key that unlocks the demo to full version. Plus there are several user created systems u can get and the multiplayer can be a blast. I still fire up the game frequently for a good space combat fix. The dog-fighting can get rather intense in close quarters, with multiple hostiles firing missles at your six. Combat tactics are reminiscent of the old FFE days, without the ability to stop time. =D Also the Evochron developer and community are very helpful and courteous, unlike some other places I won't mention. >I'm also having some control problems with my stick. UC works fine in Windoze XP SP2 as far as I know. At least the final UC 1.30 patch does. But like all 3000AD "products", it tends to be crash prone no matter what OS it runs on. > >Whatever happen to Elite 4? Elite 4 has been officially confirmed as in development right now, but it appears that DB has imposed a news blackout - probably backed up by hefty NDAs. No hint of a release date, and the date and title one online retailer floated has been officially denied. I'm not in any particular hurry TBH, I can't even run Civ 4 on my PC and can't afford the 300-odd quid upgrade needed to bring the system into the 21st Century. -- Jades' First Encounters Site - http://www.jades.org/ffe.htm The best Frontier: First Encounters site on the Web. nospam@jades.org /is/ a real email address!

ROFL!!... that IS sad. I don't really know what a quid is worth, but I built a 2.8 ghz celeron, 512 meg 2100DDR, with a pos nVidia 128 meg card for $200...including the box. This was 2 years ago! Anyway...look into building your own. PC parts are cheap and easy to put together. =P

Then, I guess I'll be pleasantly surprised when it finally does hit the shelves one day. I'd pretty much written it off, when I even thought about it.

I just got X3 Reunion today, It's the most terrible game I've ever experienced. I thought I remembered reading a decent review on gamespy for it, but I looked it up and they gave it 1.5 out of 5. I'd give it 0.0 out of 5. Ahh, anyway... Have you tried Space Rangers 2? Don't know if it's exactly what your looking for, but they have it on direct 2 drive without the starforce. I've had a lot of fun with it.

Well, I'm exaggerating /slightly/. ;-) System is currently as below:- Athlon XP 1800+ 512MB RAM 128MB Radeon 9800 Pro 80GB Hard Drive CD-ROM Drive DVD-ROM Drive Windows XP It's peformed very well over the years, and the only game that it does seem to struggle with is Silent Hunter III in the more complex ports. In some respects that fact that my brother and I don't play top-end FPS games (most graphically complex one we have is Thief 3) has certainly helped. > I don't really know what a quid is worth 1 Pound Sterling equals about 1.8 USD. > Anyway...look into building your own. PC parts are cheap and easy to > put together. =P That's what I usually do anyway. The main problem is that I generally work to a three or four year upgrade cycle so that gives the PC industry plenty of time to bugger about changing socket standards. My aim is to reuse as much of the existing system as possible. At a guess, I'll need a new processor, mainboard and memory and that should do it. Probably looking at 3GHz and 1GB of RAM. I'm intending to build something that will last for about 3 years and also has room for expansion. -- Jades' First Encounters Site - http://www.jades.org/ffe.htm The best Frontier: First Encounters site on the Web. nospam@jades.org /is/ a real email address!

I seem to be regressing back to older DOS/win32 games that have older graphics but engaging gameplay. I keep hearing the Oblivion is pretty good, but since this kit runs Morrowind at a clip of 20-30 fps (within Balmora), I doubt I'll be getting Oblivion anytime soon. >> I don't really know what a quid is worth > >1 Pound Sterling equals about 1.8 USD. > Hold on, That James Clavell novel is around here somewhere... >> Anyway...look into building your own. The 1.02 version seems to be very playable so far. My UC CD is now READ-ERROR and > won't install. Heh, heh, no way. I wouldn't dream of breaking up my collection of DS games. I consider them part of gaming history. I did get back to Vega Strike. Got my old saves transferred in, got my milspec Goddard up and running, found a new cloaking device (my old one disappeared during one of the upgrades), and set about exploring that huge game universe. Actually, I didn't encounter any bugs (put about 10 hrs in); the game (at least on my rig) seemed to run a lot smoother than it did back in '03. Alas, I've now been sucked into Eve, as a result of their current 14-day trial. I'm probably going to buy at least 3 months worth of the game. The game is.....tedious, but in a way that I really like. I've only been playing 4 days, bought a bunch of new skills, and earned about 1 mil ISK doing missions (hate mining.....that's just plain the wrong kind of "tedious" for me). I love the way you can tab out while doing UPS missions and read the manual, the forums, your email, leave the room, eat, take a dump, etc., while your ship just keeps chugging along from jump point to jump point. I also like the fact you can train while not even playing. Also, there's lots of 133t d00dz playing (probably because of the free trial), so the chat is entertaining. Big decision now is whether to buy a Kestral or Merlin (I'm a Caldori, like most everybody else) or go for the Ripter (which looks like the ace frigate to me)....which will involve much more training..... Looks like you can spend lots and lots of time training in this game (took me 40 hrs to train to level 4 Instant Recall from level 3). If you haven't tried, now's the time to give it a try.

I largely agree with your comments (in the DS1 thread)about the BC series being among the better open-ended space games, despite their well-documented problems. Unfortunately, I kind of lost interest when the ability to instantly switch between the BC bridge and shuttles/fighters was removed. I respect this as a design choice, but it took something out of the game for me.

A year or so back I looked on Mr. Smart's forum to try to get a feel for how popular MP was. It didn't seem that popular. Is it more popular today? Or perhaps I read it wrong and it was really highly popular a year ago? Is he still saying that massive multiplayer with a pay-to-play format is still in the works?

However, it could've been motivated by the obvious MP flaws, or whatever. Losing the ability to craft-switch on-the-fly was NOT a very good upgrade feature from BC3K to BCM. A lot of people wanted it put back in for UC, but it never happened. As far as Multiplayer, it was always unplayable and never popular, even amoung the sacrophants. The packets were almost always lost in transit, resulting in erratic flight and combat ( ships jumped around on the screen from one point to another ), weapons fire wasn't reliable, and ground-ops on a planet was laughable. Also, one could never SAVE anything in a MP game, so the player ALWAYS had to start from scratch once logged out or destroyed ( the server also had an annoyed habit of diconnecting everyone frequently for no appearant reason). I don't follow 3000AD anymore, so the status of any sort of pay-2-play BC game is beyond me. I prolly would think it will never happen, or if it did, it would simply be UC MP patched. In which case, no one would bother to play, much less pay for the experience. =P

I'm trying to keep the RAM all the same type and speed. TBH, I'm not sure whether getting more RAM for the current mainboard (a Gigabyte GA-7DX+) is really going to be worthwhile if I end up upgrading the machine this year. > If it's SDR and you have spare slots I have some spare RAM - not > exactly the upgrade you're looking for but can't do any harm. Is SDR like PC100? If so it'll be too old.
