Any of you playing? Is it worth the money? Got any interesting stories
from your game playing experiences.

Yes (since March '05)
Yes (I have only bought one other game since, and I don't play that, so
Eve has saved me a huge amount of cash).
Yes - but they are probably a lot less interesting to other people than
they are to me. Mining in my sleep (I hate rock chewing). Hunting
pirates with the Molden Heath vigilantes. My first PvP victory. Getting
out of a mission with 4% of my hull left intact. Inviting friends along
to help me with a mission and watching them lose their ships. My first
destroyer - ditto my first cruiser, BC, Inty, AF, Battleship, HAC.
Stripping a belt in a Corp mining op, and flying cover for a fleet op. I
could go on, but I won't.

Lots of stuff - but I suggest that you read a few of the forums at
eve-online.com and see if you like the sound of what is going on.

One other point that I really like - skill learning goes on at a steady
rate whether you are in-game or not. So people who spend 167 hours a
week in game don't have that much advantage over those who have little
spare time - compared with games where you have to grind the skills out
(more fun, too).

Thanks John

I took the plunge and signed up to the 14 day trial. Initial thoughts:
this thing is huge! I'm really looking forward to some PVP and finding
some buddies to hang with.

Cheers

Hey Derek, can you give some first impressions? What your liking about it,
what your finding annoying about it?

Cheers!

Why should he? I have never done much mining, there are easier and more
fun ways to make money (IMHO).

Let me guess, you didnt find anything else to do than mining to get isk when
you tried it ?

Other and faster ways to make isk than mining. The only thing holding you
back is yourself.

or you can run missions. or trade. or become a pirate.

an effective ship for pirating is very cheap to put together and only
takes about a week to build the skills.

I'm in NZ, lag is not normally a problem. Gets a bit sticky when you are flying
from one system to another while loading a database on commodity prices at the
same time :-\ but lag isn't a problem with combat etc., not like it would be in
Freelancer or fps type games (say in Guildwars lag is much worse in terms of
survivabilty). Not an issue for me at all.

I just handed over my money to extend the 14 day free trial by another 30 days.

Hey Pete! Thanks for sharing that, I'm in Perth (Aus) so the ping will
either be around +200 or -200 depending on which way the data goes :)

What is combat like if it's not ping orientated? Turn based style?

No, it's real time, but the design reduces the effects of lag. You pick
a target and hit the trigger (all client-side) and after that the weapon
keeps firing (server side) until you or the target is destroyed or it
runs out of ammo. So one "click" accounts for many attacks. Lag is
annoying, but it doesn't often affect the result of a fight.

I'm in SoCal on a hi-speed connection. I haven't really experienced any

It's realtime. I pick my targets when I am 40-50 km out. I release my semi-
autonomous drone fighters. (You can sick them on to a specific target, but they
look after themselves also). I assign weapons to fire on targets, depending on
range ... weapons have ranges in this game which you can fine tune by what ammo
you load ... then I forget about it, start locking other targets, maybe re-
assign the drones to take down the most damaged ship first - it's a lot more
like a general standing on top of a hill giving commands than like a fps,
moving the targetting cursor around with your joystick. So you have time to
think, plan and make decisions. Lag doesn't really come into the equation.
