Has anyone ever ventured into the Alaska System in the PC games Freelancer? I'm interested as The jumpgate is access denied.

Yep, in the OpenSP mod I play there are 3 ship yards, and a few other stations all clumped very very close together. The rest of the system is filled entirely with ice asteroids and is relatively empty as far as my scouting was concerned. I did locate two jump holes directly above the ship yards, but they might have been there only because of the mod. Ceo-

Is Freelancer worth playing? Somehow I missed it when it came out. (Long ago I'm assuming.) Was it a sort of Privateer derivative? I might give it a shot if I can find it. TIA

Oh it's definately a Privateer dreivative.. consdiering it was made by the same guy that made Privateer. It looks and feels like Privateer in almost every way. I had a tremenously good time with this game for many many months. It was the only game I played at the time. It was the first game since Privateer to suck me in like that.

Planets, stars and stations were too close together. How the hell those planets, stations and ships survive 100k away from a star is beyond me. They must have uber-fuckin shielding. =P

IMO it has good points and bad points. + Visually, the FL universe is very pretty. + The game runs very well even with lots of ships on screen. + The stoyline/plot is interesting enough and the characters are OK. + Great is that you can fly using the mouse - a Godsend for those of us without joysticks etc. Flying and combat is v. easy to master - The ships look good but there is not enough variety. Plus there is not enough variety in add-ons, weapons etc. - The universe is too small and it all starts to look the same. - Once the plot ends, the game thins out a bit. - The enemy ship AI is repetitive, predictable and unrealistic - One of the major attractions of the game - to shape your own destiny and either fight for the good guys, or the bad guys, or act as a trader - doesn't work. The plot and the game mechanics pretty much forces you to fight for the good guys. The trading system is weak and the game does not represent trading economies in any realistic way. Prices of goods vary little from one place to another, making trading dull and largely a waste of time. - All the missions are practically the same - Microsoft really screwed up the long-term appeal of the game here. Flying around doing the same thing over and over to make money gets boring after a while - All the talk in the bars is the same, and there is no player interactivity on the planets - which look pretty much same everywhere - or anywhere else to speak of - again, this would have been easy for Microsoft to improve on Despite all the negs mentioned, it is still a decent game and fun to play for some hours.
