Has the sci-fi genre completely died?

After reading all the over-rated hype about Galactic Civ 2 and hoping
it would revive
the genre and inspire creative programers but alas, this sim GC will not
impress *experienced* players much imo,it's just another "civ" type
game and certainly not *creative*. When you compare it to the real
classics such as Game of the Year: Starflight
it seems so shallow, unfortunately gaming in this genre has NOT
progressed but actually regressed especially when compared to classics
like Starflight which had actual storylines with depth..did all the
creative minds in this genre die..if you don't believe me,read some of
the SF links especially:

http://necrobones.com/starflt/

Pretty much on life-support. Star wolves looks decent though it's alot like
Privateer.

Pretty much what I thought , sci-fi fans are desperate for almost
anything hence the accolades for almost anything remotely sci-fi
oriented unfortunately, they will have to wait until another team like
those who created Starflight back in 1986...Starflight may have been
the *only* sci-fi game *ever* to win Game of the Year except maybe MOO?
If
GC2 got 9.0 on gamespot, that shows you something

... SF would get a perfect 12. ;)

Well Space Rangers 2 is pretty good. Although not a true space sim,
Star Wars Empire at war is fun also.

Oh, oh gee, my god, a 12!!!

Despite only desiring to really be a tard in response to you're post (yes
I'm a tard! :)) you do make a good point as well. BUT, you're discrediting
GalCiv 2, it is by far one of the better, and more challenging games out at
the moment for those who love 4X and a generally great AI to smack their
heads against. It is NOT a sci-fi game in the sense of Privateer, Elite,
Freespace, Freelancer, Vega Strike, IFH, Star Control 2 and 3, EV Nova, or
you're Starflight. It's set in a futuristic setting, but that's just the
setting, the theme, instead of different countries you've got different
species, and so on. It's a turn based strategic game with sci-fi flavour. To
people who enjoy a challange and the many nice features it brings us, it's
easily a 9.

SO, with that out of the way, like I said, I sort of agree with you. They
are being developed but they are certainly not mainstream. Try out Space
Rangers 2, that will probably tickle your fancy. If you didn't recognize my
reference to IFH, it stands for I Found Her, it's a Bablyon 5 game, in which
you get to pilot the famous Fury in the B5 universe. Be warned, it's very
challenging, uses Newtonian physics and is not for arcade players.

Good luck finding something to play, and thanks for the Starflight link, I'm
going to have a look see now.

Sounds more like Star Control 2 than GalCiv. Not really a good example of
a strategy game, if you ask me.

Hi Justin, science fiction is not a computer gaming genre. Sci-fi is a
literature genre. Within computer gaming, sci-fi is theme that crosses
gaming genres. IMHO, you've confused this when comparing GalCiv with
space-sim genre games.

Have fun,

Not a true space sim. Its not a space sim in any shape or form. Its just a
boring rehash of a typical RTS game like Command and Conquer!

You can hardly answer an honest claim about the space simulation genre being
dead with that kind of example! Sapce sims are dead and have been for years.
Only Elite 4 can save us.

If what you are looking for is "Sci-Fi with amazing story" then you must try
Bungie's Marathon. It's a first person shooter but throughout the game you
interact through computer terminals that reveal a crazy story. You can
actually read all the terminals at http://marathon.bungie.org/story/ but you
can download the game for free now using AlephOne from
http://source.bungie.org/ There is Marathon 1 and 2 and Infinity. To play
Marathon 1 you need to get "M1A1" Everyone should have this.

Ummm....that's what I said. Perhaps Sci-fi would have been a better
choice of words. EaW is still fun regardless of the genre. Elite 4?
Lol! how many time have I heard that title being thrown out?
