So?

Its a pretty sad lookout in space sim games or any other kind of sims for
that matter, when you start to look forward to an 'X' game. PC games
development hasnt been so bad for years. I see these last few years as a
large black hole in PC gaming - and games like 'X' are doing nothing to
remedy the situation. Stop giving these guys your money for goodnessake!
Then we might actually get a space sim worth buying.

What do you want in a space sim Nats?

The technology involved in making a space sim with excellent *gameplay*
is not too overwhelming for an indie developer, so I think your best
chance of getting what you want is getting involved with a promising
indie product.

My game, Axiomatic, represents a bit of a clean slate in terms of
gameplay. Right now it's just good clean space fragging fun, but the
important upside of this is that great ideas from the community can
make it into the next version!

Tell me your great ideas: alphageek@ten-ninjas.com

And this in another false idea that games have to have great multiplayer to
be a good game - cant you see that by demanding this kind of thing you are
killing the space sim genre? Whats wrong with a game with strong gameplay
and reasonable graphics. I have played about ten games online in total and I
cant say Ive ever wanted to return since.

I will be very surprised if there is a PC gaming industry at all in another
twenty years the way we're going.

The whole thing is turning into a money spinning industry for the men in
suits. And I would imagine there are a hell of a lot of men in suits
regularly meeting at the X headquarters. Im all for continuing the space sim
market but if this is the only option forget it.

Ive bought every X game going so far - every time Ive been suckered into
thiking that the next one would be the Elite Ive been wanting. And they
never have been. In fact X2 is practically identical to the original X.
There is no difference! And 'X the return' or 'X the rerun' or whatever it
is will be exactly the same again. Dont believe the hype. And dont buy any
more of this crap.

Of which I am the many others are extremely grateful, I probably _wouldn't_
get it if it was multi player. Why ruin a good game with other players?

Thanks for the opinion, like arseholes they are I guess.

Anyway, this is a space sim group, and the X games are space sims, and many
people enjoy them. So instead of posting an inane response just go check it
out. The game has been improved on by the people who played the first two
games.

I.e. the fans had direct imput into MOST aspects of this game, egosoft
formed a group called DevNet and let fans with scripting/economic etc
experience in the X games in it. They've all contributed and frankly I think
this game is going to be fantastic. Larger, more free form sectors, better
scale aspects due to a bloody good looking engine, better economy, in fact
this is a major thing, the economy is going to be much more on the "alive"
side of things than it was in the previous X's. Other NPC's will be in
competition, direct and indirect with the PC, they will be trying to form
their own empires, explore, capture ships, and so on. You can choose to
interact with these NPC's by taking them on or you can ignore them and just
play the plot missions.

Anyway, thats this arseholes opinion :)

Maybe my original post was a little harsh, I appologise for that after I've
heard more of where you've came from and your experience.

I tend to agree with you on most of the things you've said. I did like the
X's though I guess, and X3 is just once again I guess twanging that
Frontier:Elite desire. I personally think you will still buy it, egosoft
isn't a huge company, I dont think there are as many suits as you think
there would be, personally it seems like a company that is heavily in
contact with their fans via their forums etc, and one that just wants to
produce a good game for them.

Again, just my opinion and observation.

I suspect that X3 is really only going to be X-Tension 2.5. Got burnt once
with X2 so I doubt I will get this one without a playable demo. Plus if the
systems are yet another tiny little grid around which nothing happens I will
pass regardless.

Ok, well I will be buying the game, and I am at least semi literate, I will
write up a review once its up. I know it may be biased but I'm generally
pretty critical as well, if something is annoying me then its annoying me
and no bias will get rid of that.

So... watch this space :)

I just had a newsletter come through from Egosoft and some of the new
screenshots look pretty good but not a single one they have released that I
have seen show the user interface. There is one interesting shot which looks
like the ship is in low orbit or the planet is really massive. But I still
think there will be roughly flat square grid, the stations will be located on
or around that axis with maybe a gate at each cardinal direction and planetary
bodies will be far off in the distance being nothing more than visual fluff.
Hope I'm wrong of course but there you go. Come on Egosoft, make my day! ;-)

I was disappointed by X2 mainly because it wouldn't play. I installed it
from the box, no go. I patched it, no go. it wasn't fair as I actually
paid for this game. I got it from a bargain bin so I couldn't return it.

Stan, if we stop buying space-sims, even crap space-sims, then the
people who might develop decent space-sims will turn their attentions
elsewhere.

Now that is a very good point which has been raised on other sim genres such
as flight sims and sub sims and whether people should buy sims just to
encourage developers to make them. But I'm a gamer that values my money. I
dont just buy a game to pay for development. I buy a game to play and have a
bit of fun away from work.

Perhaps I have become spoilt by some minority games like Rome Total War,
Frontier, Falcon 4, Call of Duty and Halflife that have melded their
ingredients to produce classic games - even games like Wing Commander were
great as I see them!

But also I guess I find it difficult to understand how a carefully crafted
game like X isnt better. Sure it has nice graphics theres no arguing that.
But the gameplay just seems so barren. I actually find playing the game to
be a rather depressing experience because of it. I actually feel quite empty
whilst playing and I come away from the computer feeling like Ive wasted
hours of my life. Now that surely cant be good!

I can explain what things X needs to be great. And they all revolve around
simple changes to the gameplay. But there just doesnt seem to be anyone in
the development team who seems to see eye to eye with me. Instead of adding
the things that I feel would be crucial they instead tinker with the
commerce system or add larger space stations. These are things I do not care
about personally. What I really want to do is have the flexibility to fly
anywhere in the universe in a semi-realistic(!) manner and fly down to the
planet surfaces and land myself. I want there to be a challenge in actually
flying the craft whilst avoiding Spacial phenomenon. I want to be able to
learn some skills that will make me better at the game over time. Elite had
these kinds of things, that are solid, fun gameplay features. I cant see any
of this kind of thing in the X games. They are games for another type of
person that I am, and every time I buy one I am hoping that this time just
perhaps they have got it right. So far they havent got it even near. I'll
not be buying anymore. Its sad that this is the only space simulation in
development it really is, but Im not funding developers with such limited
vision. Thats how I feel.

Hey Nats, sorry to be flogging a dead horse here but I just thought of
something that might make you appreciate the X Universe a bit more.

No I'm not holding my breath, but I've just finished reading some fan
fiction by a _very_ good author. He has written 3 novel sized stories (with
one more to go I think) about the X Universe and some characters in it. His
method of writing is good, but what's better is the background he provides
into the X Universe. He provides us information about the sectors, and
brings into the light concepts like deep space, and the relations the
sectors have in regards to their solar systems. How the majority of the
known species don't even know where they are in relation to the galaxy. How
the Xenon has interstellar capability and has fleets of capital ships
lurking out beyond the sectors, deep in space.

He adds some great new concepts to it, and as far as I can tell they meld
fantastically into the world we play in. To me reading his work made me want
to jump back into X2 simply because it seems so much more developed.

The website that you can find them on (and no I've nothing to do with it and
there are no banners!) is:

http://x-universe.kiwi.nu/

The ones you want to look at is Traders Tale by Mercenary, the rest are good
too but the TT are by far the most professional and well written.

Anyway, just thought I would try to help alleviate that empty feeling you
mentioned. There is a great deal of life and background to the X Universe,
it just has to be found.

I they make it with decent missions and multiplayer ill buy it. Would
love to geta pirate clan together and build an empire.

Also they realy have to get a decent combat engine up. No shoot the
ship a certian ammount of times tillit dies. have sub systems and
tergetinng. So you can take out the engines or weapons or comms.
Depending on what your looking at doing.

But alas i think they dont listen. if the same crap as X2 i wont be
bothering. make it fun and put a dcent interface on it and i might
download the pirated version atleast :0

Bye.

I agree with all of that. I keep thinking that perhaps theyve got their act
together this time. But they never do and the new X games are always the
same as the others except for slightly better graphics. This time there were
words going around that they would have full planet landings. Well now Ive
heard that that isnt the case anymore - and even if they had introduced this
it would have just been FMV alomost certainly in my mind! I have seen the
various previews for X3 but Im still wondering to myself what on earth would
actually make me want to buy this game again? I cant see anything new that
sounds remotely interesting to me. Theres loads they could add, I'm sure
most of us here could write a list of 20 major things they could immediately
add to increase the fun gameplay. But they just dont seem to ever listen to
anyone other than a few nutters somewhere who keep asking for more trading!
Must be the same two people that keep buying every game and keep the forum
going. I know I got fed up with X2 after a couple of days of buying it. I
uninstalled it and havent even got near to putting it back on my computer.

The interface was HOIRRIBLE. Somthing i used to use on old BBS systems
ages ago. But they were easier to use :)

Would love to capture many ships and planets and resorses and build
and empire. And then create a larger empire with alliances with other
players online. And then either uphold the law or attack other
alliances and make a shit storm of trouble. And all in the middle of
this traders getting their JOLLYS in the middle of all that caos.

Getting great trades because of trade lanes being shut down resorses
being sacres like the real deal. Not like in X@ where trading was
PATHWTIC nothing real about that. You could have a kack full iunvasion
and the prices of resorses woulf be probthe same and no real reason to
trade unless ytour a real Tarade freak.

Give me an easy way to command my fleet and ill buy the game and
ourfitr it. I hated that their were diffeent statiosn for everything.
I would like to order stuff and they deliver it to your ship and
installit. Now that would be great. That alone would make me want to
buy the game. Might take longer but you can do that and get on with
the game and get a message later thats its ready to go and then you
just asign the ship to whatevber you wanted it to do :)

We can only hope. Much much more i would like in the game but not
hopfull.
Bye.

ANYWAY, now that you two have had your major (and amusing in its over
eagerness) bitch session how about you wait until the game is released at
the very least?

Hey I am the first to agree that if the game was more Frontier Elite or
First Encounters like it would be better. But its not, the games evolved
from the different ideas and that's that. Obviously you (Nats) ignored my
email about the fan fiction which gives tremendous life to the world, but
hey that's your choice.

Anyhoo, please continue with your jumping up and down at how crap you think
the X series is, don't let me stop you.

I liked X2. Not as much as Terminus or IWar1/2, but there isn't much
to choose from wrt 1st person space shooters. The game has a lot of
potential and I'm happy to see a developer commited to keep plugging
away. Maybe I'll revisit X when it gets to about X5.

I 'may' revisit an X game 'when' or rather 'if' it ever gets some decent
planet landing abilities which you can control and are as realistic as
Elites was. But the game will have to be a bit more interesting to play and
without the stupid star gate system where it can take a lifetime to get
across a few different systems. If they could introduce a hyperspace system
with fuel like Elite then that would be much better. But lets face it I am
dreaming.

Oh yes and there should be some brilliant beam lasers introduced like
Frontier, not to mention brighter graphics and more 'down to Earth' feel to
the game. I just feel that the game designers are trying to hard to be
artistic and come up with these sparkling dreamy fantastical space stations
when in actual fact I feel that space travel in the far future will be more
like Star Wars not 2001. Things should be grimy and broken in places,
pirates should be rife, police should be seedy, and you should be able to
hang around in far out systems and live like a pirate without even needing
to go near the inner systems except for plunder. The game just doesnt have
any of these aspects - in fact the only way you can play the game at the
moment is to be a trader. You cant explore, you cant pirate, you cant bounty
hunt, or run courier becuase all of these aspects ae just really boring to
do after a few goes. In Frontier you could live a life of exploration or
being a pirate and never get fed up. Well not for months anyway.
