An impressive demo for the new space combat game Ares Rising is available for download at www.imaginestudios.com. What? Not enough market speak to grab your interest and get you to give it a try? Well I'm just one of the programmer types and not a marketeer, but I can tell you it's nifty features I guess. I'd have to say that the combat is definately the best and the most unique feature of the game. Equipment There are like 40-50 different weapons systems including MIRV missiles, Nukes, instantaneous beam weapons, slug throwers, projectile cannons and auto-turrets to name a few. Add in cloaks, radio jammers, ECM's, sensor drones , and decoys and you can see how combat can get quite interesting. Enemies Ahh my baby. I did most of the AI and as a programmer I'm required to tell you that it rocks (programmers tend to have ego's the size watermelons you know). The AI's employ advanced combat maneuvers and are quite adept at using all of the equipment to its fullest. They also work together in groups with leaders commanding their wingmen and chosing the best tactics to rip you and your wingmen to shreds. Add in massive capital ships, battle stations, and freighters with numerous individual rotating turrets and you can see how combat can get quite challenging. Features Multiplayer deathmatch or coopertive missions over IPX(LAN), TCP/IP(Internet), modem or serial. Inertial or fly by rails flight models (your choice), ship strafing, virtual cockpit mode, and a 'pad lock' feature that's quite cool. For those of you who don't know what 'pad lock' is, it's a feature found in many flight combat sims where the camera acts like the pilot's head and stays pointed at your target, not always straight forward. This is what makes Ares nifty to play, no more of the usual turn, turn, where's my target? turn, fire, turn, turn... well you get the idea. You also won't be facing thirty of the same enemies in a mission, one right after the other, the enemies are varied and challenging. Add in full control of the wingmen you hire, the loadout and type of ships you fly, and even the missions you choose to fly and you can see how Ares can be quite fun to play. Now go download it.
