I believe the count may be going negative and then it's interpretted as a large positive numbers. This happens when bad programmers switch between signed integer and unsigned integer when moving a value to a temporary variable and then back again. For example, the structure holding the permanent value might be unsigned. When you buy that item, the number in the inventory is moved into a temporary signed integer variable to subtract the number purchased. The difference is then saved back into the inventory structure. If it goes negative on the subtraction then when it is placed back into the inventory structure it looks like a huge positive number.
