When you create your char, you determine a number of skills to start with.
This is the first trap: if you don't know what you're doing you are likely to
make wrong choices for your 'basically free' skills, and this can cost you a
lot and slow you down quite a bit later, because you can actually lay some very
good foundation stones for your further career at this point.

All other skills will have to be bought as a 'skill book' which can then be
read and trained. Some of the skill books I bought after a couple of months
play were 4 millions of in-game currency. They get more expensive ...

The Devs sure know how to force people to keep grinding so they can afford to
pay to progress. And after 2 months of playing, some opened-up skills take a
fortnight to train, and that gets expensive in Real Money, make no mistake
about it.

Let's just say my wife was chuffed when I decided to chuck EVE, because of the
money saved, and because she got to see a whole lot more of me all of a sudden.
Guild Wars is nowhere near as time consuming; even when powerplaying for a
title (finally got 'survivor' a couple days back, solo all the way! Whoopie. I
think I may buy Nightfall after all and find a new guild.)
