http://gamasutra.com/blogs/FelipePepe/20150625/244262/CRPG_History_Abridged__21_RPGs_that_brought_something_new_to_the_table.php I think the only ones on that list of 21 I have played for sure are Bloodwych and Fable. I may have played Dungeons of Daggorath as it sounds somewhat familiar, and probably one or two of the Ultimas. Gives me some new old things to look for. - Justisaur

I may have played Ultima IV, but the earlier Ultimas all run together in my head. I also played Alternate Reality on my Atari. I remember the game as being very difficult and having to map while playing with pencil & paper. I certainly wouldn't categorize it as much fun. I never finished it. D.

I like his list. Even the worst RPG I have ever played, Wizardry IV, does belong on that list I'll admit. It was certainly innovative, even if it wasn't any fun. I'm surprised you haven't played the Xeen games. They were pretty popular in their day. Might and Magic 3, 4 and 5 have aged well.

My playlist was a lot more complete.
Although there were already a lot of Ultimas in that list, Underworld
really deserved a mention. It was the first real smooth-scrolling
first-person ("Doom-like" we called it back then, even though it
preceded Doom by several years) roleplaying game pretty and
definitively put a nail into the coffin the first-person/step-based
RPG genre
Certainly more worthy an inclusion than Pagan, which really didn't add
anything new to the genre; it wasn't the first RPG with a dark tone
and its gameplay was in no way innovative.

Not only does Ultima Underworld predate Doom, it predates Wolfenstein
3D. And it supports looking up an down, something Doom didn't.
But this and other omitions are apparently due to the list being focused
on "more obscure stuff". The omition that caught me by surprise, and
had me rechecking the criteria, was having Bloodwych on the list but
only mentioning Dungeon Master.

Yeah, obscure. Bloodwych seemed like a poor clone of Dungeon Master with a couple interesting innovations. I just remember it as an o.k. game. Dungeon Master seemed far more innovative to me.
