Xbox 360 Controller on a PC.
The Buttons & sticks ! , the buttons sooooo! many buttons ??!!!

With so many PC games reviewed as essentially designed for Game Pad control
I decided it was time I brought one.
Didn't want to spend to much as I'm not convinced I will feel like using it.
I've had no experience of modern Gamepad controllers.

The Xbox 360 seem to divide into 3 groups .
They all work the same with the same stick / buttons arrangement.
There are Wired & Wireless (more money & complexity) versions

@The very cheap copies for as low as £5 inc postage. Widely bad reviews for
both feel & reliability.
@The 'Microsoft Licensed' ones often with different cosmetic looks /
styling.
Reviews find these maybe good .Research carefully. Cheaper than Official
ones.
@And then there's the 'Official Microsoft' ones should all be all the same &
OK quality.

There are a lot of used ones on Ebay around £12+ inc post.. Approach with
caution
For PC play it needs to be an Xbox 360 type not older Xbox or Xbox One.

I settled on an wired 'Afterglow A1' Licensed one.
Around £18 UK - Amazon or
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/m.html?_odkw=xbox&_ssn=homeandgardenltd&item=191578554453&_osacat=0&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_from=R40&_trksid=p2046732.m570.l1311.R1.TR6.TRC1.A0.H0.Xxbox+con.TRS0&_nkw=xbox+controller&_sacat=0

I paid just £10 inc post.
Its got flashy green lights in a transparent casing that accompany the
Vibration effect.
That's Fun n Silly n Annoying & can be turned of !

Driver installation may be 'Plug n Play' or if not
You should install it manually in Windows Device Manager .
Select the "Microsoft Common Controller For Windows Class"
from the list of Device Drivers & it will offer the Xbox 360 Controller.
You should have 1st got the appropriate driver for your Windows version from
Microsoft's site.@@

I thought there would be annoyances with going back & forth from Keyboard /
mouse to Gamepad.
Not so .
If I'm running a game (that recognises Gamepad) then I pick up the
Controller & that controls.
Go to Keyboard Mouse & that controls.
Not always - in Fallout 3 have to switch between them.

I tried assorted games.
Borderlands games & Singularity & Wolfenstein 2 - felt lumbering / tiring /
uncontrollable.
A real struggle aiming sniper rifle accurately .
Allowing for my lack of experience with Gamepad I don't think I will ever
choose it for that type of shooter
tho in Crysis 3 : I felt more comfortable in a sneak hide shoot type level.

Shadow of Mordor: I'm really struggling to understand how to play this & I
really want to get into it.
The Gamepad does feel better than Kb + mouse .
Also OK in Bioshock Infinite

So I think I will use the Xbox Controller but only rarely & certainly never
a complete replacement for kb + Mouse.
I think I will need a lot of practice to feel OK with it.

No, it's definitely not a replacement, but as you saw, sometimes you
want both in a game. And example for me is in GTA 5. I actually
drive cars using kbd+mouse, which is rare for me. But, planes and
choppers I just reach for the controller.

You probably won't want it for any first person games, as a general
rule third person games only.

Basically any game that you might have played in the last 7-8 years or
so that felt inordinately hard to control, or if certain missions just
seemed impossible to get past -- you might go back and try them again
with the controller. If it was released on consoles before the PC or
at the same time, unless its a purely first person game, some things
will just go more smoothly with the controlller.

But, think of it as a supplemental device and not a replacement.

Mark of the Ninja I played with a x360 controller with good success.
Mirror's Edge....I can't recall if I used it with this title or not.
I used it with great success with the Resident Evil HD that came out
recently
Oh! Definitely use a controller for adventure games such as Broken Sword
and Grim Fandango: Much superior to crouching over a keyboard in these
slow-moving games.
It would likely be a good choice for Beyond Good and Evil and other such
console ports.

But I've tried it with NFS Shift, and have decided a controller is just an
exercise in frustration in simdriving -- you need a wheel & pedals. I
suspect this is also the case with space games.

I play pretty much every third person game with a controller, the rest
with a mouse keyboard kombo. A controller really is an extension not a
full replacement.

The OP should also download a Key Remapper utility for games without
built-in controller support, as they offer game profiles to get you up and
playing quickly. I paid for one called Pinnacle
http://pinnaclegameprofiler.com/ but there are of course many free ones. I
used this for an early Broken Sword game that didn't have controller
support.

I got one as a present for my birthday as there were some of the 8-bit cheapo platformers on steam I like that using the keyboard was just too difficult for.

I switched between it and kb+mouse quite a bit playing Saints Row series, controller for driving, mouse & kb for walking. But the vibration starting pissing me off when it would rattle on the desk, I found there was no way to turn off vibration in those games, and no individual control to shut it off in the OS after hours and hours of searching and trying things, and I got tired of pausing the game and unplugging it, and plugging it back in when I needed it.

So I took it apart and took the vibrators out. I'm far happier with it now, it weighs considerably less now and is far less fatiguing to use too.

I've found some games like the south park one default to it and don't seem to work with the mouse & kb though, and the controls for that were pretty weird, and other games like to use weird buttons like lb etc.

I wonder if one of the Logitech or Razor controllers would work better as they are typically far more customizable. It works well enough though and is pretty comfortable though, so I can't see myself getting one, although my son is getting close to playing some of the games with me, and I could sure use a second one then, so maybe I'll try one of those then.

Thanks rms
Those Pre written Profiles sound really useful.

I also note the Freeware JoyToKey utility

Seems to be the one most mentioned on the Net.

yeah, my F510 has vibration toggle button. I don't know how other gamepads vibrate,
but I do not like F510's vibration at all, so I turn it off always.

Xbox 360 Controller on a PC.
Just a follow up post.
I've been trying this for quite long sessions in Bioshock Infinite and
Shadow Of Mordor.
Its no good for me re. kb+ mouse.
Just can't feel comfortable / in control with the thing.
Its sooooo difficult to precisely aim & turning is clumsy.
I've pretty much given up on it.

Most games that are designed for the controller kind of do the aiming
(and sometimes turning) for you, unfortunately.

The controller works better for non-fps movement. i.e. driving, platformers, top down, etc. I still far prefer kb & mouse for any first person movement and aiming.

For the next day or so you can pick up Darksiders I & II plus all DLC
for only $12 US.

Good games to play with Xbox controller.

I believe they were $10 on GOG yesterday. ^_^U

(Then again a lot of games were on sale over the last few days)

Well get them wherever you want to get them if you don't have them.

Today, Darksiders 1 and 2 with all DLC would be $70 US purchased on
GOG.com, and looking at the sales GOG has e-mailed me, the last time
they were significantly on sale on GOG was on 5/11 where they were
offered at 60%.

So, that's either $12 today or $42 a month ago. Your choice ;)

I have Darksiders II. I'll try it with controller.

I've spent a lot of time now with the one I brought - Afterglow Ax1 -which
is good -
in games like Mordor / Bioshock & I really can't take to it at all.
Its so difficult to aim.

Find it difficult to imagine anybody finding it easier to use than Kb +
Mouse.
I'll struggle on with it some more.
Perhaps look at some users Video hints n tips.
Maybe consider a fancier 'Gamers' mouse.

I'd imagine. I mostly use a controller for where the analog buttons and
triggers and sticks make sense. Way back when that was GTA Vice
City. While it was playable with mouse and keyboard, a controller made
motorbikes and boats actually fun. Flying was also much easier but I
wouldn't call it fun...

Same thing really in GTA:SA, especially the bike stunt challenge... I
wonder if anyone finished the NRG-500 Challenge with a mouse and
keyboard? It's the one where you race around a dry dock trying to get a
bunch of fairly difficult jumps to reach a bunch of glowy things with
very little margin for mistakes, time is just super scarce.

More recently, driving in GTA 4, Defiance and Rage at least have been
games where the controller makes sense. On the other hand, Borderlands
showed how to do mouse + keyboard driving controls that don't suck so no
controller use there.

> Maybe consider a fancier 'Gamers' mouse.

Always a good idea. I realized once on a remote working day that even my
retired MX-510 gaming mouse is great for desktop use too. Especially
compared to a Dell pointing stick. High accuracy, sharp buttons and easy
motions are good for any mouse use.
