It's not out for a full year, I've been hearing of various bugs, and
really 8.1 is working fine for me anyway. The question is are there any
obvious gaming performance enhancements, DX12 or something? I haven't been
following it.

I'm curious. I used to try these when I had 3 machines set up for LAN
gaming. I'd try it on one of the spare machines. The last time I ran a
Windows beta on my primary machine was Windows 7/64.

I'm still not convinced 10 isn't a step backwards and the spare PC's
are gone, so I'm sticking with what I have!

Tech previews and betas are mostly intended for developers, industry
journalists and others who make their living directly as a result of
OS features or changes. That is the only category of people who are
ever likely to provide useful feedback to MS and really help shape the
product, everyone else is likely to sit back and scratch their head
and wonder about things they'll never understand. The only reason
they make it so widely available is because controlled betas are
costly to conduct, especially when you need to reach such a massive
market, an insane number of countries, and still provide backward
compatibility with ancient software (something NO other vendor does).

Everyone here should ignore it for now unless you are just the type
who likes loading up a VM for purposes of seeing things evolve.

I'm still on Windows 7

What happened to Windows 8 & 9?

OK, I know about Win 8 but I'm trying erase it from my memory. I have
it on a laptop and still don't know how I haven't thrown it to the
floor and jumped up and down on it until the abomination is smashed to
pieces.

Probably because it's my Wife's laptop, is why I haven't.

Where did Windows 9 go?

I don't know if it's true, but there is (if nothing else an
interesting) rumor out there (which is actually believable and
feasible) that after testing, MS decided to skip 9 and go with 10
because so many third-party developers wrote code that checks to see
if the OS version begins with 9 (95, 98) and follow a particular path
of code if not.

http://www.extremetech.com/computing/191279-why-is-it-called-windows-10-not-windows-9

Folks will eventually blame MS for this I'm sure, even though for as
long as I've been developing software they've been giving
announcements to the developer community with lead time on the order
of 5-7 years about changes such as this that should be updated in code
to ensure future compatibility. It seems given the chance they will
err on the side of caution and try to keep all those old programs
going, even while an occasional die hard clutches onto their copy of
Windows XP with cold dead fingers (feeling clever for doing so, no
less).

A lot of non-technical folks don't understand that "code rot" happens
quickly in technology. A given bit of code that used to work becomes
broken as the ecosystem surrounding it changes over time. Something
that worked yesterday is unlikely to keep working by itself unless
great measures are in place to keep it working. Microsoft has
completely shattered industry expectations with regard to backward
compatibilty. How long they are able to continue to do that will
probably depend on their overall succes and to what extent consumers
continue buying their software and hardware products.

Compare that to the Apple ecosystem, for example, where things get
tossed aside in the name of obsolescence quickly. But, why shouldn't
they? Apple makes their money off hardware, not software.

Traditionally, every other Windows OS is a stinker. 95 good, Millenium
stinker, XP good, Vista stinker, 7 good, 8 stinker...

Skipping right over 9 allows them to break the cycle of good releases
and unleash two stinkers in a row. People don't upgrade from good
OS's! ;-)

Good call. Yes, my pre-coffee list may have skipped a few branches of
the family tree! I still 2000 in with the NT and XP 64 bit crew.

Not really a comitted home OS, sometimes problematic for gaming!

Well, the joke is, 7 8 9. But maybe it should be 7 8 XP, Vista, 8, 8.1
and 9...

More realistically, common apps apparently include checks for OS version
containing "Windows 9" from the 95 and 98 era so that may have been the
reason.

Haha!

I like it.

I did buy a copy on Windows 8 when it was first released. I spent so
much time and effort trying to get it to look and behave like Windows
7 before it dawned on me to just forget it, mark it down as a bad
experience, and go back to Windows 7

So I did.

I didn't take to Windows 7 at first, although I didn't dislike it in
the way that I disliked Windows 8. But at least with Windows 7 there
was the benefit of Direct X 10 and future iterations of DX.

Thanks comments. I shall be skipping this w10 preview then .
Back when I downloaded the Preview for Windows 8 .
By the time I got around to actually installing it
all the reviews/comments had put me right of
so I've still not nor intend to try it.

However must install Service Pack 1 to my Win 7 .
It seems to be increasingly necessary.
I skipped it at release as it looked like a collection of existing updates
which I assumed I had already.

Yeah, wasn't 2000 the successor to WinNT? I think it was mostly geared
toward the corporate environment but my memory is fuzzy.

Nit picking but I'd also take exception with the "95 good" statement (it
was a nightmare on my machine at the time, with registry errors every
time I booted up) and say 95 bad, 98SE good instead.

Not really. I might give it a whirl in a VM. It's a little early though,
I expect I'll be running 7 at work until 2020 or so... But maybe, if
DX12 comes and brings some real advantages.

What I find interesting is that people are so concerned over what MS
calls Windows externally, while at the same time the Mac operating
system has been stuck on version 10 for something like thirteen years
now, falsely labeling each major release of the OS with simple
incremental point release numbers (10.1, 10.2 etc.) something that
should seem almost fraudulent to anyone who understands anything about
software release cycles.

A point release is supposed to indicate a smaller incremental
revision, while OS X has been re-invented a gazillion times during
that process, including a fundamental change such as the hardware chip
it runs on (the move from PowerPC chips to Intel), and for the most
part, with Apple stuff you have to assume that every annual upgrade to
their OS is going to break every piece of software you've purchased so
far until it's updated (and you can't necessarily assume it will be).

But it seems to be the trendy thing to do to gossip about the evils of
Microsoft. I guess some things never change.

VM here let me to see how awfully ugly Win10 with its "Water Closet" icons.
Seems I will stay with Win7.
(There are other idiocies as well.)

I haven't loaded it up and probably won't any time soon, are you
talking about the tiles on the start menu as seen in this vid?

If so you can just unpin them as he shows here.

I be surprised because of all the developments with Tablets, Mobil 'phones
. Low power - small memory.
32 bit takes up less .

As for a 128 Bit O/S ???!!!
Have you heard something ??
I can't imagine in the real consumer / Bizness worlds any sense or
possibility in that.

Oh come on now, by the time Microsoft gets to windows 12 or so the bloat
will be so bad they'll need to be 128 Bit (and probably a terabyte base
install size.)
