The Most Outstanding RPG I've Played

The Most Outstanding RPG I've played lately is "Torchlight II."

I also have "Torchlight" (aka "Torchlight I").

"Torchlight II" is from Runic Games.

Fansight: http://www.runicgamesfansite.com/

Torchlight WiKi:

"At the end of the first Torchlight, the ancient dragon Ordrak the
source of the corruption under the town of Torchlight (Torchlight I)
was defeated by the Destroyer, the Alchemist, and the Vanquisher."

"Several years have passed, and the Alchemist has become obsessed with
the dangers of Ember and the Ember Blight from which he was apparently
never cured. He steals Ordrak's Heart and destroys the town of
Torchlight. Traveling to the Estherian Steppes, he begins siphoning
magical energy from the Elemental Guardians, powerful beings who
control the balance of the world's six elements."

"Now, a new hero emerges, tasked with following the Alchemist's path
of destruction and dealing with the chaos caused by his unexplained
actions."

IGN REVIEW:

"Beyond the town of Torchlight lies a world shrouded in adventure and
mystery. Guardian-warrior Syl appears in a prophetic dream, summoning
the player to the Estherian Steppes. There, you meet with the
Destroyer and soon venture across the continent of Vilderan, an exotic
frontier besieged by forces of evil. A discovery unfolds, that the
Alchemist, following his conquest of dark ember, disappeared on his
quest to defeat the unknown corrupted force responsible for destroying
the mystical race of Estherians. Aided by Syl, the remaining
Estherian Guardians, and clues left behind by the missing Alchemist,
you will find yourself battling a powerful enemy that threatens to
unravel the elements of the entire world."

"Runic Games' sequel in the award-winning action-RPG franchise
features additional character classes, quests, monsters, and dungeons
not found in the original game. Torchlight II also now includes
cooperative play through a free, peer-to-peer matchmaking service.
Play with your friends, and use the free peer-to-peer matchmaking
service to meet new players of a similar level and interest. Together
players will discover expansive RANDOMIZED outdoor areas and deep
ominous caverns; random instanced and persistent dungeons, a huge
variety of all new monsters and villains, endless variations of loot
to find, and quests to complete. Players journey through the perilous
Overworld, enjoying all new weather features, time of day events, and
a rich and cunning story to drive gameplay."

One of the biggest features I like is capitalized in the above
paragraph. The game maps are randomized each time you start a new
game.

- The entire area maps have their feature generally randomized.

- Where certain features appear (such as portals) will be is slightly
different locations each new-game.

- Entrances to caves and other quest points will also be in slightly
different spot each new-game.

- Some non-quest locations on a map are dependant on the Character
Class you choose.

** This means the game is much less booring that other RPG games.
Slightly different each new-game.

There are 4 Character Classes:

- Outlanders (gunslingers)

- Embermages (wizards)

- Berserkers (melee fighters)

- Engineers (cannon/shield users)

But, since "Torchlight II" has MODs, I've added the "Playable
Werewolf" and "Destroyer" (Class from "Torchlight I").

You also choose a "Pet" which acts as a packhorse and can battle
alongside you. Your "Pet" can be sent to town to sell/trade from what
it carries.

Like may RPBs the enemies you meet are also dependant on your Class
and your character's level.

BEST FEATURE: Unlike "Torchlight I" you can *replay* the game with
the *same* character AFTER ending a game. With all the loot, weapons,
level you had from the previous round. All enemy levels are updated
to be compatible with your character's level.

**** WARNING: I first use the Steam version of "Torchlight II" BUT
started having the Steam 'Error code 50' which means the Steam launch
could not find the game, even though it was installed (and
reinstalled).

I liked the came so much I plunked down the $ for the Runic's DVD
version. Plays without any problems.

I was given it by a friend, and we were supposed to play it together only until we finished it, but beyond our first 2 hour session never did, I keep waiting for him to want to play again...

The first couple hours were really fun at least.

I had been playing quite a bit of DIII-Reaper of Souls until recently, and keep going back to it. RoS seems to have greatly improved DIII at least.

I have to admit I have it on my Steam list but never came around to
playing it. Sort question, I always had the assumption the Torchlight
series is a very well done Diablo Clone, is this true?

yes, very convenient, straight to business (1st one), save anywhere.

Unless I am conflating it with s.th. else I got Torchlight from GoG as a
freebie when buying [whatever it was].

I fired it up for a little while.

The first thing that struck me about it is that it's (or at least looks
like) a remake of Fate - the game that was accused of containing spyware
of some sort. Fishing for things in a pond looks exactly the same.

The second thing that struck me about it is that it's pure hack'n slash,
often at a frantic pace. Roguelike with graphics, whatever you want to
call it.

If there's depth (apart from dungeon levels) then I haven't delved
deeply enough. I deleted Torchlight as a waste of harddrive space after
three sessions or so, and I have terabytes free at that. Dungeons of
Dredmor (sp?) lasted more than twice as long and has not yet been
wiped .... :-)

I ran into the exact same problem with a friend of mine. He was more
into another action RPG at the time which I did not like so we never
played Torchlight 2 for very long.

Personally, I think Torchlight 1 and 2 are great action RPGs. I love
the pet system. Having a pet who does not die and can go back to town
for you to sell your loot is really nice.

Why don't you try Single Player?

I don't pay online games, so I don't have your experience.

Well.... sort of, but a far cry from Diablo (from what I remember).

Yes, very Diablo. I don't care for the art, which is more 'WoW' than Diablo though.

I can't say why, but when I first played Torchlight I didn't like it at all, but went back to it for some reason recently and rather enjoyed it. I had been playing DIII, and it's funny but it seems DIII stole quite a bit back from Torchlight.
