Perhaps, but not for running Windows software.

"and partially implements Windows API functionality. The latter is
assisted by including parts from the Wine compatibility layer for
Unix-like operating systems, but other functionality is implemented by
the developers themselves. However, progress has been hampered by a
lack of developers with relevant skill-sets."

I could tell you a lot of horror stories about musicians that tried to
use Wine to turn Linux into a useful audio production platform, but
we'd be wasting both of our time.

If you really want a Linux gaming solution, your best bet is probably
the newly announced SteamOS from Valve.

But I would caution anyone to be very careful what they wish for. I
see SteamOS as really just another console platform. The more time
Valve spends on it, and the more folks that support it can do nothing
but deteriorate PC gaming as we know it. I understand why Valve is
doing what they're doing, but as PC gamers is it not necessarily in
our best interest.

People piss and moan about Windows and constantly look for something
else primarily because they don't have enough experience with the
alternatives to realize they're already using the best available
option.

Well you know how common wisdom says not to use version 1.0 of any
software?
This OS is apparently only up to 0.3.15.

>From the website
"ReactOS 0.3.15 is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not
feature-complete and is recommended only for evaluation and testing
purposes."

"The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system
which is binary compatible with Windows."

It's not a goal if you've already achieved it.

So, no, not as a serious replacement.
Might be fun to mess around with to see what they've accomplished so
far, but it's not going to be a replacement any time soon.

It is the best available option if you only use your computer for gaming
and hooking up your ipod to the itunes.

Or if you use your computer for any sort of productivity purpose
outside of graphics design (where it is approximately on a par with OS
X), or if you're a technical person that just prefers to be somewhat
in touch with 90% of the desktop computing market rather than running
some rogue flavor of linux just to say you can.

Agreed.

I have been working with Visual Studio and .Net for about eight years and I
have never known such a productive environment - not to mention a joy to
use.

I can attest that XCode on OS X has come a long way. Apple
development is weird at times and no where near as well thought-out as
Visual Studio and .Net, but both of them take a nice healthy crap of
beans all over Java/Eclipse development.

(also don't mean to imply that Java/Eclipse is the only other option,
it's just the most equivalent example that comes to mind.
Ruby/Python/PHP and most script-kiddies that code on the LAMP platform
are somewhat farther down the totem pole).

ReactOS
It s an odd Beast.
Not Linux.
A Russian attempt to copy Widows starting in 1996.
The old saying is 'a dog trying to catch its own tail'
this seems to be a matter of 'Dog trying to catch another's dogs tail
when 2nd dog is 10 kilometre's up the road & with much longer legs'

The integration of WINE seems to concede that they can't in fact meet there
goal
of re-making Windows.

Below is a Link To a Torrent of a works from USB version of ReactOS

I've never understood how such a vast percent of the tech community's
population simply and consistently fails to "get it". Trying to do
something the same differently is not innovation, it's not impressive,
and unless you do it well it's an irrelevant waste of time.

How someone could have enough programming skills to even get a project
like this off the ground while simultaneously failing to identify the
fundamental reasons why it will simply never work is really an area of
fascination for me. Morbid fascination I should say.

It does seem an odd project.
But perhaps educational & a maybe useful way for the Russians to start
building
an Windows alternative.

Then you did not use Borland's pruducts in days of their glory.
All Microsoft attempts looked really pitiful.

Comparing Microsofts dev tools to Borland 20 years or more ago, yes
that was true, but he's talking about modern versions of Visual
Studio. Starting around the time of Visual Interdev and VB peak
popularity, Microsoft really got serious about their development
tools, and some are catching up but nothing has really surpassed them.

Nowadays Microsoft just have not competitors, have they?

I'd say XCode is a competitive IDE, although I don't think I'd say
it's as good. Objective-C is kind of a screwy language on top of a
screwy framework, and to a large extent I think the language and
framework matter more than the actual development environment.

I did indeed use Delphi 5 - 7 for around 8 or 9 years.
Good enough at the time. But hardly in the same league as .Net now.

It was the pre-Delphi stuff that was really good (in it's day). Turbo
C++, Turbo Pascal specifically.
