What are some of your 'old school' favorites? (These can include games for the Apple ][, C=64, Amiga and other personal computers) Should any of these classic titles get a(nother) remake or get tweaked to work with modern operating systems? (Note: I am aware that there are emulators available) ^_^ If you'd prefer a remake, should any extra features (ie a level editor) be added? Thank you for your responses. Enjoy your summer, everyone. ^_^

But going back to the 386 and other games of the DOS era. >Should any of these classic titles get a(nother) remake or get tweaked to >work with modern operating systems? (Note: I am aware that there are >emulators available) ^_^ I would love to see remakes of: Alone in the Dark Betrayal at Krondor Blood Carmageddon Cybermage: Darklight Awakening Daggerfall Descent Gunship 2000 High Octane Master of Magic Privateer Quarantine Shadow Caster Star Trek 25th Anniversary Syndicate System Shock Tie Fighter Ultima Underworld X-Com >If you'd prefer a remake, should any extra features (ie a level editor) be >added? For the most part I'd just like to see them remade _ACCURATELY_, not re-envisioned like that piece of shit Tomb Raider Anniversary that changed so much stuff it was a different game (a much poorer one). Actually I'll add the original Tomb Raider to the list since Anniversary was NOT a remake. Update the graphics, but leave the gameplay, the story, the interface alone and stick that console controller up your ass, don't force bad compromises on games that were never intended to use one just to try and attract the console crowd who won't buy the games anyway. Spectrum.
On the PC.
"Betrayal at Krondor" early '90's action RPG
"Deus Ex" 1st one 2000 action RPG
Be nice to have a 3rd game in the "Star Wars - Knights Of The Old Republic"

I've yet to see one of those "improvements" in a remade game, movie or other that was actually an improvement in the minds of anyone but the author. Case in point, Quicktime events - I'd like to sledgehammer the balls of the guy who started that trend. I'll add one more game to the list: Daikatana. It had great AI, interesting levels and some neat weapons. Ditch the retarded, offensively stereotyped sidekicks and the leet gamer speak, update the graphics and there could be quite a decent game once you wipe the Romero off it. Xocyll

Warewolf <warewol...@shaw.ca> writes: > What are some of your 'old school' favorites? (These can include games for > the Apple ][, C=64, Amiga and other personal computers) I've been reading the Commodore history book starting last week (or kinda rereading since I've been reading the second edition, http://www.amazon.com/Commodore-Company-Edge-Brian-Bagnall/dp/0973864966.) Some fond gaming memories from that era but not that much. Paradroid is one I've been thinking about recently. There was an update on the Amiga and a free version "Freedroid" has been around but I haven't tried either. I remember I was also impressed by the old Space Taxi with the speech and all back then but it's so long ago. Perhaps the biggest wow effect were the first coin-op games I saw. Battle Zone, Centipede, Tempest, Asteroids Deluxe, Gravitar, Jungler, Kangaroo, Pengo... When I played some old C64 games in emulators years ago, usually the graphics were rather off-putting. With arcade games usually the graphics weren't so bad but the simplistic gameplay didn't grab me that much. > Should any of these classic titles get a(nother) remake or get tweaked to > work with modern operating systems? (Note: I am aware that there are > emulators available) ^_^ I dunno. I think I'd like some of the old PC stuff more than the 80s stuff. I wouldn't mind a really modernized X-Wing for example. The old Windows version was a cheap update. They just updated the in-game vector graphics to run at 640x480 but bitmap stuff (like the cockpit overlays) were just scaled so they looked awful. I remember thinking back then with both X-Wing and Tie Fighter that it would be cool if you could have a more tactical role in the game so that if you sent fighters to do something it would actually get done with some degree of proficiency by your fellow pilots... Way stronger AI in other words. Especially X-Wing was bad, I think Tie Fighter had somewhat better AI. I guess there'll be more Star Wars games and movies coming out but I doubt Disney will do much good with the franchise. > If you'd prefer a remake, should any extra features (ie a level editor) be > added? Including a level editor is always good IMO.

With DICE doing Star Wars Battlefront on the FrostBite3 engine, there is indeed something to look forward to here. I think EA has another Star Wars game in the making that's coming from the developers of Dead Space.

If you don't have a copy you can buy one Steam that comes already bundled with DosBox. I actually like alot of the changes made in X-COM: Apocalypse. Just not having to requip all your units at the start of every battle is a big improvement. There's a bigger variety missions locations, you're not fighting over and over in the farm tile most of the time. Psionics isn't as unbalanced though teleportation is almost as game breaking. Even the new realtime system makes fighting on the larger maps less cumbersome than it would be in turn-based. There is a version that doesn't even need dosbox but you have to disable directx hardware acceleration. I have Xcom installed on Win2K right now because that computer is hooked to a good old fashioned 19" CRT monitor. But Xeonauts is shaping up to be a worthwhile contender as a successor to Xcom. I have the beta and like it. http://store.steampowered.com/app/223830/ http://xenowiki.goldhawkinteractive.com/index.php?title=Main_Page http://www.goldhawkinteractive.com/forum/
