GOG seems to be the pirates favorite. I personally would like to contribute to kicking some pirates heads in, giving them the ass kicking they deserve.

"Andrew Rybenkov" <aryb...@gmail.com> looked up from reading the entrails of the porn spammer to utter "The Augury is good, the signs say: >CDProjekt CEO is a former cracker and software pirate > >http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/cdprojekt-ceo-is-a-former-cracker-and-software-pirate.69815/ You don't actually read these before you post them do you? So he was a "pirate" when copying software was NOT ILLEGAL in his country? And when did CD Projekt get formed? Oh the same year copying software became illegal in that country. So he "pirated" when it was legal, then formed his own software company when it became illegal. A high schooler who did something that wasn't illegal where he was then went totally legit, yep he's a criminal for life. Since he's publicly admitted what he did back then, don't you think he'd have been arrested and charged if he'd actually committed a crime? Maybe next you can write about all the people who used cocaine in the USA when it was still legal and paint them as criminal druggies since it's not legal there now. You're not a criminal if what you did is/was legal where/when you did it. Xocyll

GOG does not >> charge a price-premium for the DRM-free benefit. > >What does DRM stand for? You mean in reality? Or in John's mind? To John it can be synonymous with authentication to client software, or anything that doesn't allow him to share and/or install software with reckless abandon and without limitation, basically equating the term with "copy protection" and considering the two terms the same. The term has an extra layer of symbolic importance to him that could be the subject of an entire book by itself, but you're better off discarding that definition. In reality, and outside the walls of insane asylums it stands for Digital Rights Management, which is a term that was coined to describe processes or systems for controlling piracy of intellectual property (music, video, software) by placing limitations on the relationship between the device and the software. For example, mandating via software techniques that an MP3 song could only be played on X number of physical iPods at a time, or that a game could only be installed on X number of PCs at once. Note the relationship betwen the placement of the intellectual property and the device it is placed on, it is key to differentiating DRM from other methods of copy protection. One of the biggest sources of confusion for John seems to be that Steam does offer game publishers a *optional* DRM service called "Steamworks DRM" which is in fact a form of DRM, but only a small number of games sold on Steam (lless than 1% ) actually use Steamworks DRM (and when they do, it is a choice of the publisher and not Valve. Valve's own games typically do not utilize Steamworks DRM, even if they utilize other features of Steamworks like cloud storage). Some games sold on Steam do use other forms of DRM, but those DRM mechanisms are present in the game even when purchased elsewhere, even if on physical media. In almost every case, if a game is DRM-free on GOG, via Humble Bundle or one of the other venues, it will be DRM-free on Steam as well. So basically you can just ignore any message from John that contains the term "DRM" going forward, at least until he figures out what it really means.

AKA the owner of an IP* or their proxy, determining if you have any "right" to be using that IP via some kind of registration or authentication scheme. IE Skyrim won't run unless Steam is running. Starting Skyrim without Steam causes, Steam to start. Rin will say this is because Bethesda chose to do this and it has nothing to do with Valve or Steam, BUT when you try to shut down Steam while Skyrim is running, Steam will refuse to close until you've shut down the game. That most certainly is Valve's doing. You can however bring up the task manager and kill the steam process and play without it running, which kinda proves that it IS DRM because it's not a necessary part of the game itself, the Steam requirement is only there to check to see if you have the game registered through Steam and thus have a "legit" copy - It's Managing your Right to use that Digital property. * IP = Intellectual Property Xocyll

It matters a great deal.
You're not a criminal if what you do is not a crime.
When what he had been doing became a crime there, he stopped doing it.
>And nowadays his company make money by selling someone else' works.
>Be it games themselves or cracks by hackers.
They license the games, and the cracks (if they do actually use them)
were always intended to be distributed widely.
If the authors of those cracks want compensation all they'd have to do
is go to court and prove they wrote them.
Of course that would open them to massive legal repercussions under the
DMCA and other things so that's kind of unlikely.

Of course they don't, they don't own the rights, they never owned the
rights, Sierra Entertainment did, and they got bought, transferring
those rights to the new owners (Vivendi Universal, who later merged with
Activision and are now known as Activision Blizzard.)
Activision Blizzard owns King's Quest.

Oh you mean the guy who went to court charged with Treason, Murder and
Cannibalism and was cleared of the cannibalism charges because there was
no evidence and convicted of the other charges and sentenced to death?
Gee, what's a court to do, require evidence or just convict based on
rumors?
See
http://histbusters.blogspot.ca/2009/05/cannibal-emperor.html
among others
If he actually ate "thousands of people" there'd have been evidence or
at least some credible witnesses, but neither were ever found.
Occam's Razor: there never was any cannibalism, it was just a smear
campaign to justify his overthrow.
Let me guess, you get all your "facts" from Fox News and the Tabloids?
