I LOVED Fallout 3 and played through all of the DLC. When New Vegas came out I
played it to I would guess half way and dropped it in favour of other
releases. I never could get back in to it as newer games always seemed to have
more polish, looked better, played better etc. A shame really.

I hope this is more than just more of the same.

Lets hope they don't follow the path they took with the Elder Scrolls
and make it even _less_ of the same.

I felt the same way: F3 was just vastly _more fun_ than FNV... it felt
like a real world, with tons of stuff going on, which you could
interact with at your own pace.

For me it wasn't the graphics/polish, it was just that FNV
felt... well, boring, and forced. _All_ the various factions were
sort of stupid and annoying; I never felt like I wanted to follow or
support any of them, but the game kept trying to nudge me into doing
so.

The environment / setting in FNV was also yawn-inducing. It felt
... empty. There wasn't anything like the sense of possibility you
had in F3.

[I did play though pretty far though, just so I could kill off as many
of the factions as possible. The game did have that: shooting stuff
was fun... >< ]

I hope they set F4 in a real city (Boston is what I've heard, and
having lived there, that would be cool), and use a different developer
than FNV...

Personally I really liked FO:NV just not as much as FO3. Part of the
problem was the FO3 was all new a shiny whereas NV was in many ways more
of the same. I found that it was easy to just wander off and do stuff in
much the same way as FO3.

As for FO4 ... well, really looking forward to it even though I'm sure
it'll be even my of the same just with added shiny bits! Please, please,
please fix the character animations as that has to be the biggest
immersion breaker for me.

I never did get the DLCs until recently - bought the GOTYE for $13, I modded the hell out of it, still haven't gotten to the DLCs though...

I didn't really care for FO:NV either, I did finish it once though.

There's a ton of mods that make it look better, similar to ones I'm using with Fallout 3. I don't know what could be done for gameplay though.

Yeah, I'm far more interested in Wasteland 2 at this point after seeing thier trailer. I'm sure I'll check it out, but I'm not excited, I won't be buying first day or preordering like I did with FO3.

Any recommendations on mods? Mostly I used just one mod for both FO3 and
NV, it was the one that made the consolitis-huge fonts a little smaller.

I actually felt New Vegas was more approachable since the gameplay was
better. At least combat since now you could hit the proverbial side of a
barn. Fallout 3 always felt to me like even if you put the barrel of
your gun in an enemy's mouth, still some of your shots would miss
somehow. Other than that, the story and the world in NV were pretty
meh. Too much war and atrocities is just off-putting. And who wants to
have shades of grey in their entertainment?

The hardcore mode in NV was kind of interesting but not really thought
out. I guess the game engine doesn't really support the idea of a
canteen that can be partially empty and filled up but still it seems
like it shouldn't be that hard to implement. Then there was the problem
with the companions: they didn't seem able to use antivenom on
themselves so if they were stung by something they'd just die off unless
you spammed them with antivenom and just hoped they wouldn't die. Of
course there was no way to tell if you'd given them enough antivenom or
not.

Willow companion. She will follow you to DLCs areas as well.

For fallout 3... I'm currently using a ton of them. looking down my list...

Absolute must haves:

1. Fallout Mod Manager - makes installing mods easy.
2. DarNified UI - fixes consolization of menus, must have.
3. 3gb enabler - you're stuck with 2gb of memory max without it.
4. Archive Invalidation Invalidated - required for graphics changes
5. Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch - fixes a ton of things
6. Dual Core fix - assuming you have dual cores.
7. Frag grenade fix - grenades don't bounce
8. Auto Aim fix - allows you to fire at what you are aiming at.
9. XPreward Hotfix - fixes xp to be the same as very easy no matter what harness you are playing at.

Graphics improvements:

1. NMC texture pack - non living graphics improvements, a bit dark, but the only one I can find that does everything, have to put brightness to max with it and it looks o.k.
2. Fellout - fixes the sky so it isn't a green cloud, everything looks better outside
3. Fellout lighter night - fixes fellout so it isn't quite pitch black at night
4. Fallout Redesigned - improves human faces considerably.

Other mods:

Martigen's Mutant Mod - approximately doubles (or more if you want) the number of enemies and makes them a bit more interesting. I really like this one, it's almost a must have.

DC interiors - adds a ton of places inside DC to explore, I didn't really think I'd like this, but it got rave reviews, so I tried it, and found myself pleasantly surprised.

GNR Enhanced - adds around 100 songs to GNR in the same style.

Eve - Energy weapons mod, This mod's given me the most trouble with loading, energy weapons are nicer, but still not quite as nice as I think they should be.

Fallout Wanderer's edition - I left this for last because I'm somewhat conflicted about it, it's got a lot of stuff I love, but a lot of stuff I hate. It's a complete overhaul and it'd take somewhere between 10-20 other mods to do what this does. It makes the game considerably harder. You can disable most of the stuff you don't like if you want though.

Some of the stuff I really like and don't think I'd want to play without from FWE:

1. Sprint Mod - you can spend AP to sprint really fast.
2. Primary Needs - you have to eat & drink or you start getting penalties, also removes bonus HP from most food.
3. Able to wear power armor without being trained, although don't get full benefits.
4. Able to have 1 follower per 2 points of cha & far better AI & control of those.
5. Alternate starts, I tried out starting out as a high karma regulator, and that was a nice change from the vault.

There's still a couple things I don't like that you can't turn off though, it changes the skill books to give a small perk instead, but only if you read all of them. It overhauls the perks, but they seem even more useless than they did before. It rebalances all the weapons and adds a lot more including some of the old fallout 1/2 ones, it seems like it's biased to small guns so far, I'm not entirely against this, but I'm not sure I really like it.

A whole bunch of other stuff I haven't mentioned that you can turn off or try different settings for.

Other 'fun' mods I'm using(not really needed, but I found them interesting enough to mention):

BlackWolf Backpack - Adds backpacks which allow you to carry up to 70kg more. I never seem to have enough space. The vendor restock is a bit annoying.

Robco Certified - Adds the ability to repair, modify and control robots. You need to spend perks and have high repair & science to do this, but there are a couple robots you can just buy too.

Drivable Motorcycle - A bit fun, you can add miniguns, flamers or rocket launchers to your motorcycle.
