You're correct--Gothic 1 and 2 use a strange, annoying non-FPS-standard FOV 
(field of view) setting which always comes close to giving me a headache 
during the first ten minutes of play.

In Half-Life- and Quake-engine games you can recreate this unpleasant effect 
(if you really want to...) by using the console FOV command, which defaults 
to 90.

I don't know if it's possible to change the setting in Gothic though. :(
