Help is needed on Darksun 2: Waste of a CD.

I'm in the Mirror Room with the parrot and the tapping old man.
I've gotten the mirror put back together several times (@3000 XP
per piece...), but all that I get is fireballed.  Whassup?
Gem?

Confusion reigns.
