I must beg to differ with a previous post, pardon me if I do not give the
name of the person who said this, but my short term memory seems to be
impaired and I have no idea how to quote a previous message. I would like
to address the idea of the "classic orthodox struggle between good and evil"
(I know it was put something like that). I find myself disagreeing rather
heartily to this idea, simply because that is just not the way it is. What
you would be doing there by having a story revolve around that idea is just
another revamping of so many other cliche plotlines that exist in other
games, not to mention utterly defying the way things really are in reality
as we know it. The world and its machinations are not strictly black and
white, good and evil are in fact completely relative, and should be
considered as such when put into the storyline of a game. Twists and turns
and jumps and surprises in plot along those lines are incredibly interesting
and often insightful and thought provoking. I definitely do not want to see
just another holy crusade to stop the forces of evil. That would, IMHO,
make up just another piece of clicheware, and I doubt that I would get much
satisfaction from it. Another thing that bothers me a lot about that ideal
is that the standard method of carrying it out consists of the incarnation
of good (in this case, the Avatar) doing a whole lot of stuff that
eventually amounts to one thing, beating up the big nasty at the end (in
this case, the Guardian). If I were to count how many times such a
situation has been played out in books, games, or other such media, I would
be here for a very long time. When I play a game, ideally I do not want to
just win, I want to learn from it, and I believe that a scenario that
revolves around the destruction of the bad guy leaves nowhere near as much
room for insight as does a game that follows an alternate scenario. I am
not in any way trying to flame here, nor am I trying to push my ideas on
others, I am simply expressing my own views on the issue, and I thank you
all for your time.
