In article <39ma4m$e...@apakabar.cc.columbia.edu>, yc...@mhoro.cc.columbia.edu (Yung Jin Chew) says: > >This last statement just shows that you know very little about how >much space full speech would take up. Given that a CDROM has 600 MB >of free space, you're saying that a game WITH free speech would take >up only 50 MB? Gimme a break! I was very much suprised to find out >that the CD-ROM version of Quest For Glory 4 takes up _544 MB_! >That's the cost of full speech! > >Anyway, on the issue, I think that even if all that is added is full >speech, that enhances the experience so much. Now whenever I play a >floppy-based game, I feel that I'm missing out on so much just because >there's no speech!!! It's like going back to those old black and >white movies with no speech... So MUCH more can be conveyed through >the human voice (read: EMOTION) than can ever be conveyed through just >reading the words. That's of course if it's done well... And there >are CDROM games that are done well -- John Rys-Davies is EXCELLENT in >QFG4, and I have high expectations for his acting in WC3. > >*************************************************************************** >* Milamber,(yc...@columbia.edu)* There have been rumours that the Great One* >* Master Magician, * known as Milamber has been masquerading * >* Sorcerer's Island, Midkemia.* as Chew Yung Jin around the Columbia * >* * University campus. * >*************************************************************************** >* "I am not a barkeep, I'm your host, the proprietor, a sympathetic ear * >* to the wretched souls who pass through these portals" * >* -- Quark to O'brien * >* ST:DS9 "Captive Pursuit" * >*************************************************************************** As far as full speech taking up tons of room, that's not always necessarily true. Privateer with full speech in the entire game only takes up about 170MB or so of CD-Rom space. In addition, as to your quote that speech adds to the emotion of the game, I have to say that only if the voice acting is good. If I had to play KQ5 again and listen to the most horrible voice-overs again, I would kill you (not to be taken literally of course). Now good voice overs could enhance a game, but it also takes away the imagination of how the written word can be interpreted, somewhat like comparing a book to a movie. Sometimes it's better with speech, other times not. I guess what I really want to say is that I really hope that games in general don't become like movies where nothing is really left to the mind to figure out, passive entertainment. That is one of the main reasons why I love PC games, I am the one in control of what happens (more or less).
