I had the exact same experience.  In fact, I had just completed
the Oracle quest on the day before the patch came out,
and encountered the bug.

I installed the patch with little hope that it would actually
fix the problem.  But, I was quite pleasantly surprised!

I also had the gold given to me in that strange way.  I don't
know quite what to make of that.
