I don't have BT I and never played it, but if it is like
BT 3, you have to find the Wizard's Guild or something similar.
Basically, the Guild is where you enter and an old man gives
you level advancements. In BT 3, there was only one Wizard's
Guild for all characters but in BT 1, there ight be one for
every class. Sorry but I don't know where it/they is/are -
Skara Brae is destroyed in BT III, remember?

Don't know ... might be a bug in the game. There is an
amusing bug in Bard's Tale III, which allows you to trade
stuff, then have both characters have the item that was
traded.
