There are lots of theoretical reasons for it - I know at least one person
who fits the attributes of a psychopath. He is actually one of the most
amusing and charasmatic people I know, but has almost the entire checklist:-
- difficulty in seeing other peoples point of view
- violent (it is amazing he has never killed anyone)
- charismatic
- infidelity
- inability to form long term personal relationships
- pathological liar
- inability to care about anyone else.

Like most things in psychology, it is probably a combination of environment
and biological reasons - I'm sure there is some correlation with the frontal
lobes (a famous example of this was when a rail worker in the 19th centure
had part of his frontal lobe blown up by a spike shot up through his brain.
He changed from a hard working honest family man to a criminal as soon as he
recovered). However, my friend also grew up in a family with a father who
cheated on his mother all the time, who promoted violence as a way of
solving problems, and who regularly beat him up and instigated a real "if
they hurt you, you kill them" mentality (it helps that he is one of the
biggest people I know).

Interestingly, he is to an extent aware of his problem - like he says, he is
your best mate until you fuck with him, and your worst enemy. He is aware
that he has traits that are psychopathic - although he will not go as far as
to actually admit he is a full psychopath.
