It seems you never had a computer without win95...

Normally plain PCs dont have upper memory. The trick is: memory can be
remapped. Any 4k page can be put to any other 4k position by hardware.
Upper memory is created by moving an unused area of memory to that location.

Under plain DOS this is a very important thing to load drivers into upper
memory. So you can be sure there is a driver. It is called EMM386.

Since I dont know Windows 95 I cant say how to install that driver. Its
easy to do with Novell-DOS. Just put a line like

DEVICE=C:\NWDOS\EMM386.EXE /U=c800-efff /frame=e000

into the config.sys It must be similar with win95 (look in the manual
under EMM386, it should be described). Of course, first you must get rid of
that GUI.

I doubt win95 needs upper memory but it most likely will produce its own
(for compatibility). The real modern DOS-programs dont need upper memory
either since they can directly access the whole memory without such tricks.

Bye,
