One of the reason I voted against what because the main argument for the split was that the group had become too high volume. What people didn't realize, but had been established by previous splits, was that the most of the new newsgroups would soon grow to volume of their predecessor. It wouldn't actually solve the volume problem. Unfortunately, while back then the traffic on the groups automatically grew in response to the new capacity, now that traffic has gone down dramatically, the now unnecessary capacity can't be as easily shrunk down accordlingly.
