Well all I can say is that on _my_ laptop Windows 8.1 boots considerably faster than Win10. That's not even mentioning that the first time I booted up the freshly installed and up-to-date Win10 it took 15-20 minutes before I could use the machine because it deemed it necessary to download and install some more updates before I got to see the desktop. Now if I'd been in the position that I need to get out of the house fast and do a quick banking transaction beforehand, I'd've been ever so pissed off. Still, something to keep in mind. Yes, you can disable the update service, but you can no longer choose to do this thorugh the control panel interface directly. There are lots of reports that even if you don't do the express install and disable all the spyware and backdoors they let you tick/untick, it still sends data home about every fsking thing you do, even if you open a new spreadsheet (there's one bloke on Tomshardware who was watching volumes on his router and noting the difference in traffic between Win10 and another OS.) So after a very short test run (36 hours) I uninstalled. I don't want countless backdoors into my system, and a lot of what I do is none of their business at all, even allowing for data mining about 'net activities. Back to 8.1. Now here's the clincher: ever since, when I turn on the computer and let update run, it tries to reinstall Windows 10. It does not give me the option, it just tries to do it. gee whizz, who would'a thunk. -P.
