Probably 2008. I knew ACs were some arcade games and had no interest in them. Then Steam Winter Sale 12-13 came, and I bought AC2 just to check was it possible that the game looked as beautiful as its screenshots. (Yes it was!) It has strong plot, and diversified enough gameplay. Still being arcadish sometimes it gave me RPG feelings, and sometimes "tomb raider" ones. Overall despite few very annoying arcade sequences I enjoyed the game greatly. My only thought was if only they made NPCs behavior more various. And in the next game - Brotherhood - they did! There, in Rome, peoples really are alive (for game standards). It is interesting to watch them, interesting to provoke miscellaneous (not scripted, predictable) situations and collisions. Even after the plot ended I continued to play (the game lets you) for a week or so. That what should RPG games do and no one actually did - dynamic world. (Brotherhood is shorter then AC2 plotwise, but bigger as a gameworld.) Then after another half-year I played original AC to see how the series began. I finished and enjoyed it to some degree, and realized how much they enhanced the series in AC2. Then (after yet another half-year) I tried Revelations and... uninstalled it after 10-12 hours. Pure boredom. Not step, but jump back. Now, I have so much criticized AC3 and so much praised AC4 listed in my Steam library, and not sure do I want to play them. -- Andrew Rybenkov
