Could not agree more - and in fact I have said as much recently on the
Kickstarter page for Wasteland 2. Having to pay for "early beta access"
is just ... ridiculous, bizarre in my book. Once upon a time you had to
show documentation skills and computing ability as well as submit your
hardware specs when applying for beta testing, and vice versa you got
extra software, gifts or even remuneration for testing --- documenting
and putting in a fair few grinding hours to try and break the software
and find bugs is not exactly unmitigated fun, if done properly ... these
days they get some eager beaver impatient kids to do that for them, and
pay for the privilege.
And instead of documented bug reports they get 'wishlists' and would
yous and could yous submitted on their web forums.

{shakes head} double dipping, indeed. And lazy. It only works because
there are usually one or three folk who really do put their nose to the
grindstone regardless of being ripped off, and they probably never even
get an honerable mention.
