Sarah, what I didn't see Spalls mention is this: After the initial
account creation and verification/activation of your game via Steam, you
can run Steam in "offline mode". That is its one redeeming feature: you
don't have to be online to run your game once the initial handshaking
has been done.

I was VERY much put out when I purchased Civilization V, specifically on
DVD because I want to buy the media and install the game and run it
instead of all this extra online account stuff ... and it would not run
without installing and then logging into Steam.
Funny, because occasionally I actually do buy games from Steam when they
are severely discounted, but to force me to go through this avenue when
I explicitly paid more to get the media - well that went down like a
lead balloon with me. Things weren't helped, as far as my mood was
concerned, by the fact that installation was held up by over an hour
because there was some steam-related problem.

Be aware: if you run Steam in online mode, it will check, and often try
to update your game if an update has been published, without even
asking. That is one reason why I run it in offline mode for months at a
stretch, where it is very unobtrusive.
