ATi is notorious for breaking support for older games as they tweak
their drivers to be acceptable for newer ones.

Since AMD didn't fire off the driver team when they acquired ATi, this
didn't change, nor did all the other bad driver issues Ati has had since
cards had less than 1 meg of ram.

Which is why I still refer to them as ATi - AMD can actually write
drivers and do shit, ATi never could.
The saddest thing about the acquisition is AMD using that catalyst
installer abomination to install their motherboard drivers.
Used to be you'd just install the driver, now you have to install
catalyst, (then reboot?) then catalyst HAS to update itself to the
latest version and reboot, and then finally you can install the drivers.

The absolute opposite of progress.
