Tanzen <waldby...@yahoo.com> looked up from reading the entrails of the porn spammer to utter "The Augury is good, the signs say: >Does anyone know if Elder Scrolls Online is going to have ridiculously >complex graphics so that most video cards overheat running it? > >I noticed that this is the new trend in gaming and am wondering if >Bethesda is going to follow suit. Unlikely. >For those who don't know about this, the sign of a modern video game is >the video card fan spinning at full blast. I have an NVidia GeForce 450 >silent card, yet still the rest of the fans in my computer go crazy >spinning to cool things down. So you have a card that was a midrange card almost 3 years ago and you wonder why it struggles a bit with new games? Is it actually the video card producing the heat or the CPU(s)? Modern games use a lot of both. >I remember the days when there used to be the occasional elegant video >game which decided that instead of decimating the envelope of polygon >technology, to work from within what is possible on a computer. >Basically a game which prized performance over bleeding edge. I think >this kind of thing is extinct now, because developers know gamers would >prefer to hear a full blast video card fan than a quality video game >soundtrack. You don't have to crank all the graphics up or all the other settings. There aren't that many games which don't let YOU tweak the settings you play with, so if you CHOOSE to max out everything, then there's only one source of blame for the noise. I can't remember the last time I heard my Video cards fan (not sure I ever have actually.) Not knowing your system or the environment in which you play, there's many reasons why you might get noise: Small fans instead of large fans so they have to spin faster to move the same amount of air. Small case with less airflow potential and more heat buildup. Hot environment where the temp outside the computer isn't that different from the temp inside meaning a lot more air has to be moved to provide adequate cooling. Variable speed fans instead of fixed rate. Yes a variable speed fan at idle is quieter than a fixed rate fan, BUT you can never get used to it. The drone of a fixed rate fan, even a loudish one gets filtered out by your ears after a while and you stop noticing it - a variable rate fan is always changing pitch and is thus always intrusive at anything but idle (and sometimes even at idle.) If noise bothers you that much, ditch the fans altogether and go water cooled or get a full tower case that holds a lot of large fans (120mm minimum)and fill it with fairly quiet fixed rate fans for maximum cooling.
