Thus spake Ceowulf <noneed@toknow.askifyoudo>, Wed, 08 Jul 2009 17:59:52 +0800, Anno Domini: >Hey guys, I just wanted to pose this to you all as I know a lot of you >are far more knowledgeable about this sort of stuff than I (as I decided >about 6 years ago to give up the tech/programmer "ghost" :p) > >Is forcing your P2P program to encrypt its data sessions actually >worthwhile? For instance in UTorrent I have encryption set to forced, >but it seems to me that in todays day and age this would mean very little. > >I've got nothing to hide other than a few downloaded episodes, but I've >always been a security nut about information and data so it's something >I've been wondering about. Short answer: not really. Until they perfect entirely anonymous P2P networks your best bet is using a cheap VPN service to almost completely disguise your IP & origin, ala swissvpn.net which I've only just started using with good results (Relakks was very flakey). Be prepared to have a decent pptp router/modem or you'll find the huge number of connection P2P makes over a std adsl modem or domestic router inside the tunnel overflowing your NAT tables & locking it up on a daily basis. Odd because going raw seems to be less of a burden on most modems. >On a slightly different but related note, and the reason I decided to >post this, has anyone here watched the series Reaper? Sounds like a lot >of fun and I'm looking for something to watch after my Chuck marathon >(great series :D). Only watched a couple Chuck eps & being an IT geek of course liked it, though it was clearly aimed at teenage boys ;). My Mrs couldn't warm to it, so eh, we watched Desperate Housewhores or Greys Lobotomy instead :-/. Reaper I saw 1st ep way back at the start & it just didn't grab me - very formulaic. -- Nostromo
