I've played both WoW and Oblivion and I have a hard time seeing
Oblivion as something to do while waiting for WoW on patch day or
whatever.

Oblivion has some fairly long quests and effective character
development in Oblivion takes some time and thought. There's also not
really a ton of loot in the game that you can do runs for.

I don't know you or your tastes in games or anything like that, I just
don't see Oblivion as the right choice to pass the time while you're
waiting for WoW. Overall, it's just a little too deep to be satisfying
for the short sessions once or twice a week type of play. I would
think maybe Titan Quest or Fate would be better for that -- games that
are open ended, fast paced, can be played in small chunks at a time,
have a strong loot component, and have fairly easy character
development. Fast and fun.
