I had the same problem as the original poster - sort of. Some 5 years
back I was running DR DOS and found that some games wouldn't run with
it and had to have MS DOS installed. The Ultima 1-6 CD was one and 
the original Sherlock Holmes game another. Basically there is a fancy
batch file that the Ultima games use to install and it needs these 
files. Even rewriting the batch files to get it to load I had 
problems with these games and so just borrowed a copy of MS DOS to
play them and then got rid of the games and MS DOS. I haven't ever 
purchased another Ultima since as anyone who writes such crap 
doesn't deserve my money. The Holmes game had a sound timing problem 
that I think got fixed in the second or third release of the 
software.
