I am responding via e-mail as well but will post this in the NG for all to read... The Secret of Minkey Island, LucasFilm Games/LucasArts A humourous quest of Guybrush Threepwood, a very savory person aiming to become an unsavory pirate, and get the affections of a certain woman as well. Why? Funny as hell. This game had some of the best humor every in a game, matched only at times by the next game series in the list: Leisure Suit Larry 3 by Sierra On-Line The lovable loser Larry Laffer tries to hook up with a sexy, worldly lounge singer/player on a tropical island. Why? Al Lowe created probably the best known character in the history of humorous adventure games, spawning many imitators that didn't quite make it. When he succeeds, you feel good. When he fails, you get a great laugh out of it. Grand Theft Auto by ASC Games As a hitman for the mob, you'll be employed for various tasks. Why? Finally -- an action game with a damn plot! Addicting storylines AS WELL as gameplay! Police Quest (original 1988 release) by Sierra On-Line As Sonny Bonds, you will patrol the previously safe streets of Lytton, California to rid the world of the Death Angel. Why? Every kid dreams of being a cop, but this is the closest you can come to the real thing without quitting your job for the academy. Very realistic, and very accurate with scenarios and procedure. Spellcasting 301 by Legend Entertainment Ernie Eaglebeek and the rest of his Sorcerer U frat buddies go on spring break. Why? Any game that features a spell to "increase bust" is okay with me! Seriously, a great, funny game with interesting puzzles! >What factors do you think make games so popular? ie. What factors would >persuade you to buy a certain game? These are two different questions, you can't lump them together! What makes games popular? Genre is the main reason. Each genre will have it's own answers for this. For myself, a pure adventure fan, it would be plot, gameplay, and length of game. >Would you let your children play your 5 favorite games? Why or why not? Yes for: Monkey Island -- funny with minimal adult content Police Quest -- the "adult" content is tamer than a history textbook. I first played this when I was in 6th grade! No for: Leisure Suit Larry 3 - Larry "scores" too much in this game for young eyes. Spellcasting 301 - they wouldn't understand a lot of the situations or the reasons puzzles need to be solved Grand Theft Auto - Nah. Too much violence. >How does the perception of the impact of violence in games differ from >that in other mediums? (ie. TV, movies, music). It's the same as TV -- it's overvalued. Violence in games or TV doesn't promote violence. Parents and teachers who do not promote good habits and sensibly punish poor ones promote violence. >Do you think violence in computer games affects children/teenagers, and >to what extent? It gets adrenaline pumping to the point where they want to play more computer games. >Do you think violence in computer games affects adults, and to what >extent? In their pocketbooks, when they buy these lousy games for their kids. --- Michael Zier <mic...@gt-adventure.com> http://www.gt-adventure.com Editor, Adventure Central -- it's where you go for adventure game stuff. 413.383.6200 914.206.3572 fax
