First the obvious points. BG is AD&D and MM7 is, well, M&M. BG
allows cooperative multiplayer while MM7 is single-player only. BG
has (quite excellent) 2d isometric graphics while MM7 has 3d graphics
that look rather dated compared to contemporary first-person games
(though there's still nothing comparable in the CRPG genre).

Personally I've enjoyed both MM6 and MM7 more than BG because they
have better dungeons, more puzzles, more stats, more frequent
leveling, simply more of everything that I enjoy in role-playing
games. I also found BG's story and dialogues rather poorly written
(which matters because there's a lot of it). They also took a
questionable design decision with a low level cap vs. very high combat
difficulty. I couldn't get through without frequent reloading and
exploiting engine flaws, which is something I absolutely hate.

There were other obnoxious "features" such as respawn-on-save,
arriving exhausted after several days of (automatic) long-distance
travelling, insanely difficult random encounters to discourage
long-distance travelling in the first place, and a very short
spellcasting range that frequently got my mage killed. The MM games
are much better balanced, more playable and simply more fun IMO.

But BG has a lot of fans so no doubt you'll see other opinions here.
