The thing is, they may be space efficient, but they most certainly are not faster. If you're playing back video/audio, they're just fine... If you're doing random access, you've got problems. The CD playable version of Armada requires 8 megs of memory rather than 4 because it needs to do so much caching..... I loaded it on my hard drive, I wouldn't play it off the CD. Even double speed CDs are ridiculously slow for normal random access. Its to be expected, they're designed for straight linear access. In my opinion, a good CD game installs all random access stuff that is used alot on the hard drive and keeps all full screen animations, long digitized speech, etc... on the CD. Origin, to date, hasn't been doing this. CD games have their place and are quite entertaining, but the philosophy that EVERYTHING belongs on CD ROM and should always be played off the CD is ill-conceived.
