Hi Chuck, This a sort of a late response, but in case you are still stuck, the purple berries are in a small peninsula east and slighty north by the oasis. I find killing the wild dogs fairly easy, but the sand twisters can be a pain for an early level character. Hit the sand twisters with your sling shot from a distance (they don't attack you until you walk within a certain distance) and NEVER let the monsters attack you from two or more sides, keep retreating until they are lined up in a single file.
