I just started U8 and I am having a hell of a time jumping!

Two instances to name:

One... in the 'haunted' house in the West end of the first city there is
the hole to the basement.
and Two... the pool with the dragon statues on the est side of town...(I am
trying to get the chaos gem)

Both places are a bitch to jump in.  Every time I jump and then climb up,
as soon as I let go of the mouse button, the Avatar falls back down.
About 1 time in 50 I get lucky and it works...  There has to be a trick to
this that I am missing! :)  Please help.
