   OK, I finally decided to go in the Gorlab Swamp to get to the land of dreams.
   Some woman told me I needed to get three items in order for her to give
   me the Serpent necklace(or whatever it is,my memory fails me..). I have the

Mirror of Truth
Helm of Courage
Crystal Rose of Love

They serve no purpose other than enable you to do some things in the swamp.
To get the Helm, you must seek out the Goblin King.  To get the Rose, you
must uncover the secret of the Oracle in Fawn.  I (or others) can provide
more details if you want.

           2. How am I supposed to get past the swamp to the area beyond it?
   I haven't found a way to stay awake yet.. yes, I know I could cheat with
   the code but I don't want to screw up anything (and I hate cheating so!)

Just worry about the Dream world for now (and get the three items)

           3. What is the key of ice and the key of fire needed for?

Inside Furnace, you use the two keys on the alter at the Great Temple - this
gives you a new key which then takes you to a serpent gate.

           4. Are all these Serpent items actually good to use in combat
   or are they just novelties to keep the game going?

I never used them in combat.

           5. And finally, is the maximum party limit 5? Back in the Black
   Gate I had about 7 or 8 members? if so that sux!

I think I had up to 6 at one point.
