gamepad woes

Hi y'all.

I am having major trouble with my gamepad after I installed Windows
XP.

For first, it's a gameport device, not an USB, so getting it to
recognize the damn thing was a task in itself. I have finally found a
correct driver, so it was installed and appeared to work correctly.

However, once I tried it out in the game, it was completely
unplayable. For lack of a better description, it behaves as if
somebody is lightly tapping left on the gamepad controller. For
instance, if you try to go right, the dude on the screen will go right
jerkily. If you leave the dude standing, it will twitch towards the
left constantly.

I'd like to emphesize that it's a DIGITAL gamepad, so there's no way
of adjusting the position as with the analogue joystick. Also, in the
windows control panel settings after you calibrate it everything looks
ok. No twitching. Only in the games themselves.

At first I thought it was a problem with the gamepad itself, but after
I plugged in another one (which also uses gameport) same thing
occured.

Can someone please help me - is this thing software or hardware
related? Would USB gamepad fix things?

Thanks in advance.
