any good RPGs?

So, what's some recommended RPG's out there? Say, last 5 years?
I'm looking for something like "Morrowind" but maybe a little more
traditional pseudo-Medieval/D&D-esque.
Or, hardcore sci-fi.

Something expansive and diverse.
Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Man, Gothic 2 would be perfect for you then. Widely
available in stores now. You should also pick up
the original Gothic, which you can find at budget prices
in stores like Circuit City or Best Buy.

I found the Gothic II web site, and I'm interested! But man, I can't
find any reviews on it. Nothing at Amazon, no used copies to sell on
eBay....
I haven't gone to see if BestBuy or GameStop has it in stock, but at
least it's on their Web sites.
What amazes me, is I can find even less regarding the original
"Gothic". Nothing. Anywhere.
Since my good video card went kaput, and I'm forced to use a
voodoo3000 for now, I was hoping I might be able to get a copy of the
original, assuming its video requirements are less than 32MB true 3D
rendering.

Thanks for the suggestion!

overlooked RPG : Anachronox

That video card is going to limit your choices of RPGs that will run well
quite considerably. I would suggest the Baldur's Gate series as a good
starting point. Also if you've never played it, Planescape: Torment,
while not your typical fantasy setting, is superbly written and one of
the best RPGs.

I'm enjoying it a good deal at the moment. I'm still on Anachronox the
planet and it's a little tedious looking for things to photograph. I also
am not that great of a fan of continuous turn-based combat but overall i
like the game. It's great seeing a PC specific game done in the console
style.

Good heavens, man, you can get a replacement video card for less than the
cost of a game these days. It would seem to make a lot more sense to me, if
you got a new card and THEN asked what games are out there.

You want Gothic 2. A somewhat similar but much better game than
Morrowind. Gothic 1 is said to be good too, but suffers from so poor
controls I haven't been able to stomach playing it.
Traditional (extremely so) but not similar to Morrowind are Baldurs
Gate 2. I can't recommend BG1 - I hated that dreary slugfest with its
infinite numbers of infinitely dull random encounters. There's also
Temple of Elemental Evil, which is a faithful (but buggy) recreation
of an early eighties pen-and-paper RPG dungeoncrawl, so if that's your
thing...

Far less traditional is Planescape: Torment, which simply is the best
cRPG ever made, but if you're an experienced cRPG'er it takes some
getting used to e.g. that there's no point in powergaming, and that
points are better spent on WIS, CHA and INT than on STR and DEX.

> Or, hardcore sci-fi.

Non-fantasy RPG's are, unfortunately, few and far between. Fallout 2
is a post-apocalyptic game, and quite decent.

That's because it's made by a German company, and has for that reason
been treated by the US sites/press in a very "redheaded stepchild"
fashion.

Ooohhkayyy.... No, don't even think about playing Gothic on that, it's
a Morrowind-like game, and a voodoo card simply wont have the
traction. I'd recommend a Geforce4 Ti 4200, they're quite capable and
reasonably priced. Avoid all Geforce cards with an MX anywhere in the
name, though.

With that card, you might want to have a look at Baldurs Gate 2 and/or
Planescape Torment instead.

His card might not be able to run Gothic 2, but it will run Gothic just
fine.
I played Gothic originally with a Voodoo3 2000 and the only thing I had
to disable was the sky effects (those would make it slideshow).

Well, I COULD spend $50 on some crappy MX card or something, or I can wait
until I can spend $150 for a Radeon 9600 Pro that is made of DX9 games and
should last me some time. A $50 already won't run some of the newer games.
Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping I might be able to run Gothic I.
I was thinking of spending only a little bit more and getting a Radeon 9600
Pro. It's a generation better than the Ti4200 (which is a good card in its
own right!) and will last me for another generation of games for only $50
more.
Yeah, I knew about the MX. =)

I have a copy of Torment somewhere...never really gave it a try since the
Planescape millieu's not really my thing...but I have seen some really good
revies on it.
Think I'll give it a try.

Thanks!!

Cool, thanks!
It looks like I might be able to find a used "Gothic" through Amazon's used
stuff section.
Thanks!!
